FS7: Firmware V3.0 Released? [Interval Recording, Focus Magnification area position+more]

Just received an email from Sony and tucked away at the bottom is a message saying that FW3.0 has been released for the FS7.

But when landing on the FS7 page the update doesn't seem to be available to download yet. Has anyone else experienced this?

The update looks like it adds a lot. Just from the small bit of copy in the email it's adding:

2K Full/2K Centre options in Imager Scan mode, Interval Recording, Focus Magnification area position and Noise Suppression in Cine EI mode.

Looking forward to this and i am curious about the results. Especially how the interval recording will work. Currently im ok with 1fps "timelapse", but if this new recording mode can do starlapses with the same color science as my normal recordings (no matching in post) that would be really cool.

I love the idea of noise suppression in CineEI.

NR is the only reason I have ever used custom. I love this a lot! That and a moveable focus mag window will be the features I want the most. The Centre crop would be another handy tool.

Now I wonder if they have fixed any of the known and reported bugs?

That is the biggest question. I think we will find out next week. All highly welcomed features though!

It was possible within the processing capabilities of the camera. I suspect Sony intended CineEI to be as unprocessed as possible (considering that WB is burned into file). But there was significant demand, in large measure on this board, for NR within CineEI. And they delivered it first on the F5/55 and soon on the FS7. Now this is only an educated guess. Actually a highly educated guess.

That's great NR came to CineEI on the FS7. I wasn't sure it could do it incase the processing was limited.

Do we all really believe this 'processing limitation' line? Strikes me it has more to do with market segmentation and protecting different product lines.

I can't believe how noisy shooting in Cine EI is.. its a pain. I really am excited about that and also to be able to finally move the magnification button around THIS MEANS SO MUCH TO ME....

Now a moment to complain, wouldn't it be awesome to be able to burst high frame rates?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! yaaaaaay.. or nay..

I don't. It would be much more expensive to take things out of the board, create another version with less computing power then just simply cripple it by software. It's not only in cameras department but the whole world of ALL electronics works just like that. Another thing is that hardware is ALWAYS far ahead then the software running it.

This is good news.. I hope they fixed the rolloff on the mic preamps. It's a bit of a pain to have to keep applying EQ in post.. sometimes I forget and then catch my mistake when I listen to the audio on the big system.

I see the Firmware Roadmap for the FS7 stops at V3.0 but does anyone know of any plans for firmware updates beyond V3.0?

There's plenty of things Sony could be sorting out and improving but have they any will to do so.

Doubt it, a fair amount of bugs have to be left in this camera. Ultimately thats what will end up separating the pro-line from the consumer division. Since these are two different camera divisions at Sony, I wonder how that works on the back end with r&d and actual feature implementation.

AFAIK, the plan is to continue FS7 development. Things change with corporations so I wouldn't take this as an absolute truth. I don't think many people realize the complexities of development cycles, feature requests, dialog between marketing-enginering-senior management, budgets and future product planning. The big dogs-- Sony, Panasonic, JVC, ARRI etc etc can't turn on a dime. Guys like BMD and Red can actually respond faster. I hope Sony does continue FS7 development and I think the success of the camera is a strong incentive to do so. If they do not, that means something more feature-laden is on the way. It doesn't make the FS7 obsolete. Electronics are like toasters. If it does what you need it to do, it isn't obsolete. I see ENG crews all over NYC with disk-based Sony XDCAM's (with 1440 resolution at that). Works perfectly for a news workflow. That's only one example. If FS7 development continues, many of us will be very happy. If it doesn't and a new camera should release, our FS7's should have been paid for and hopefully shown a profit. And might still be useable for years after that (oh, I saw an EX-3 last week shooting a fluff piece on the street).

I'm chomping at the bit for center crop/scan to play with some ENG and Super16 glass on the FS-7. That's about as far into the future as I care to gaze.

Thus endeth the rant.

Things like bugs and intentionally rolled off bass response on the mic preamps are the Sony hallmarks separating consumer gear from pro line. My CineAlta cameras have flat frequency response, good enough to record orchestral performances. My FS7 requires an external mic preamp to accomplish the same thing.

These days, the corporate philosophy is not to fix bugs, but to tout the next model to replace the model you're frustrated by, and get you to part with your money again.
