C100: Firmware upgrade possible?

What is the possibility of Canon releasing a firmware upgrade to add features to the C100 or C300? Are they selling so many cameras that they don't have to compete feature-wise with the Sony cams and the GH3, etc...?

From what I understand there is a firmware update coming for the C300. Not sure what that will include though. As a lot of people know Canon is releasing a firmware update for the 5D MkIII with clean HDMI out in April, so maybe the C300 will hit then as well.

That being said, it would be possible to update some feature on the C100 seeing as how it shares the same image processor, etc with the C300.

Possible, not probable.

The two features that I would like for my C100 is time-lapse functionality and 1080p60. Naturally the C300 would get 60p as well in that case.

The sensor in these cameras was explicitly designed with a 60 fps readout, and that is actually what is happening in the background regardless of what framerate you choose. This is in order to reduce rolling shutter. If you shoot at 24 fps, the C100 and C300 are capturing in 60 fps and then re-clocking the footage internally.

It would be great if this feature could be unlocked. If not for internal, at least then for external recording. I am confident that it would be possible to do from a technical standpoint, but I do think that the probability of such an update is extremely slim. Possibly near the "end of life" of these cameras when it almost doesn't matter anymore.

I'm not quite sure of the extent of C300 timelapse functionality, but some basic "take 1 frame every x seconds" would be nice to have in the C100.

IIRC, it's been said that 'Continuous AF' is going to be a part of the C100, to be implemented with a firmware update. But this is Canon, and Canon isn't Red. Lest we forget, the C100 is still the new camera on the block. I'll take the intervalometer, AND PSF *DONE RIGHT*, CANON. (scowl)

Summer?

Yeah continuous autofocus with STM lenses is supposed to be coming this year and they could add a couple of other features at the same time but I'd doubt there would be any major updates especially frame rates. I'd be happy with joystick manoeuvrable magnification. They could get Yoshi in cubicle #63 to code that over a weekend.

about c300 - its impossible to output 50/60p over single SDI - so most likely its not going to happen, unless they will do it over HDMI - as hdmi can out put 1080 50/60p

also for some strange reasons canon used old CPU that can only do 25/30p internally - so there is no way we get that internal ..... unless maybe if they will reduce bit rate... but its speculation

there was some rumors that i read somewhere, that c300 owners maybe will get 2k external.... but rumors are rumors

Technically Canon used their verison of AVCHD codec. I don't believe their digic limited them to 30Psf 24P 24Psf and 60i. Their Digic DV III should be able to do AVCHD 2.0 I would imagine but until Canon releases such a firmware or a updated C100s in the future it is what it is.

Canonrumors.com Just said Canon will be introducing a C line Cam between C100 and C300 in NAB 2013. WTH? If this is the case then C100 is like Rebel T2i in DSLR line. Doomed, no question.

Not at all. Word on Twitter is that it's a high framerate cinema cam to be in competition with the FS700. The C100 is nothing like a T2i but more like the 7D/6D instead in a DSLR line.

That would still piss me off as I wouldn't mind having those features. It doesn't make or break it for me and I absolutely love the c100 but if there was an option within a reasonable price that had some frame rate options I would have maybe gone with that. Releasing it so close after getting many people to jump on the c100 would be aggravating.

I feel the exact same way.....I really need 60P/over cranking for my jobs right now. Sigh

Brilliant move on their part, gets us to buy more high end gear (after all, would you have bought a C100 at $6400 as a B camera if the C200 were out at the same time?). Their job, after all, is to get us to give them as much of our money for as little product as possible. Face it, we're all just suckers in a seller's market (me included). But at least this explains why the 5Diii is so mediocre.

According to Larry Thorpe - Canon guru and overall imaging genius, 60P is not possible with the C300, That's what he told me in November at the Abel Cine Canon C500 rollout.

I would have bought a c100 for 6400 if there was a c200 out right now, high frame rates are overrated. There are so many things for filmmakers in the $6000 price range to learn about the craft, its premature to ask for slow mo. C100 is still is the best indie cam out there for low budget, theres nothing to be upset about.

It was not an old cpu...it (Divic III)was the best one at the time they started the development of the C300...they are not going to finish the camera, then go and rip out the III for a newer one. Expect that when they put out a "mark II" or "s" model.

I agree, the c100 fits my needs amazingly right now, it just sucks that they may roll something else out so soon that has a few more features. I understand it is how business works and of course they are trying to maximize sales but it seems Canon really milks it. Just a little frustrating. I'm still going to roll on with my c100 and love it. I'm assuming if they do come with a c200 or the like with high frame rates it will be for a premium and I may have just stuck with the c100 anyway because I rarely need overcrank. Just would be nice

Because of the XF codec or because of the hardware that reads off the sensor? Because the C300 would never get 60p because the XF codec isn't in spec with that. AVCHD on the other hand has had a standardized addition that supports 60p.
