Firmware update V1.2 (2009-17009)

Well, commanderspike, for some reason your GH1 seems to be much worse than others. I use my GH1 ONLY in 1080p24 mode and so far only outdoors, and a lot of that on wide shots, and I cannot confirm the "mud" issue you are constantly reporting.

Exactly. My experience so far with my GH1 has been great but as stated many times I make a living from the video and photography business and I make a point of learning what a camera will give me and what not. I have a D90 which I know can't give me decent video but I shot more than 3,000 stills with it between last Thursday and Sunday. With the GH1 I know that the stills are not as good but I can shoot beautiful video in ANY of the different shooting modes. It takes skill, knowledge, creativity and ability to get the best out your gear.

Yes, but going from 6 MBs to 10 MBs could theoretically make a big difference if the card is indeed still choking at 6 MBs under certain conditions. Worth a try. I just ordered one.

if John says it's good, it's just gotta be good.

and i'm blaming the majority of mud on kit lens and autofocus. so far no video using a nikon lens has produced the amount of jello i've seen using a kit lens.

Fair enough - let's keep this on track and on topic.

I think we should do as the good man says.

Yes firmware and mud are linked, but we're going round in circles here. Although there isn't much info or much to discuss regarding the latest firmware update anyway :) Nature abhors a vacuum I guess.

what else can the firmware be discussed about? it wasn't an improvement on anything. it's pretty much listed on the first post what it does.

The firmware dictates almost the entire feature set of the camera, based on it's hardware. It is a big issue, but yes - this one wasn't. The end.

In another forum people are saying that the update makes the camera like new, as they say the autofocus improvement is huge. I did a quick test in low light and indeed it seemed noticably better. But there I go admitting that I use autofocus...

LOL. I am really enjoying this one. The only thing I would like is to be able to shoot mjpeg at 24 fps. By December I want to get the 7D. That I would use as a cinema camera and I will keep the GH1 as a video camera for certain projects that the 720p60 video look will be perfect for.

Glad I went back a few pages on this and saw Barry Green's post...

I'm going to try a faster card, I'm shooting on class four and today I noticed that exposure bracketing with stills, it seemed to be processing sometime after the last picture was shot. Quickly switching to video, it wouldn't start recording if I'd just shot some stills, at least not right off the bat. I'm assuming this might be me memory card speed. I also noticed for the first time the 'mud' everyone is talking about, on wider shots, as I was out in a jungly area with trees and grass. Seemed a bit more than I was expecting despite the stable camera and good exposure. I don't have any unusable footage, but I'd like to try a quicker card!

I would like to see someone try.

Back in June I tried a Sandisk Extreme 30MBps card when mud was in it's earlier days and that didn't seem to make any difference.

The AVCHD is already encoded by the time it reaches the memory card isn't it?

Sorry but from a engineer's point of view I can't help but laugh about this card-mud-relationship theory :D

The firmware will not measure card throughput and dynamically adjust the encoder to produce optimal results. This is even better than the CMOS fixed pattern burn-in theory

Awesome!

Hey, Ben.......

You say that the 720/60p looks great in 24p post...

Vegas or FCP?

If Vegas...what settings?

I have Vegas, and after removing the pull down in 1080/24p, the footage looks fine, however just dropping the 720/60p footage into a 24p timeline doesn't always look that great.

If you have Vegas, I'd love the setting you use to make 720/60p look passable in 24p.

If not...thanks anyway!

Yet that's exactly what the Canon engineers said was happening in the 5D Mark II. They specifically recommended to use only UDMA cards because using slower non-UDMA cards, occasional artifacts would crop up.
