It's difficult to find information about the thread's subject, firmware update for instance, through all the mythical mud bashing every page.
Fair enough - let's keep this on track and on topic.

Well, commanderspike, for some reason your GH1 seems to be much worse than others. I use my GH1 ONLY in 1080p24 mode and so far only outdoors, and a lot of that on wide shots, and I cannot confirm the "mud" issue you are constantly reporting.
Consider the memory card too. If someone has a consistent problem with muddy footage, etc., I'd like to see them try a Class 10 card, just to see whether the same issue Canon reports, affects the GH1 as well.

Exactly. My experience so far with my GH1 has been great but as stated many times I make a living from the video and photography business and I make a point of learning what a camera will give me and what not. I have a D90 which I know can't give me decent video but I shot more than 3,000 stills with it between last Thursday and Sunday. With the GH1 I know that the stills are not as good but I can shoot beautiful video in ANY of the different shooting modes. It takes skill, knowledge, creativity and ability to get the best out your gear.

what else can the firmware be discussed about? it wasn't an improvement on anything. it's pretty much listed on the first post what it does.
In another forum people are saying that the update makes the camera like new, as they say the autofocus improvement is huge. I did a quick test in low light and indeed it seemed noticably better. But there I go admitting that I use autofocus...it wasn't an improvement on anything.
if John says it's good, it's just gotta be good.
The 720p/60 makes great 24p in post.
Glad I went back a few pages on this and saw Barry Green's post...
I'm going to try a faster card, I'm shooting on class four and today I noticed that exposure bracketing with stills, it seemed to be processing sometime after the last picture was shot. Quickly switching to video, it wouldn't start recording if I'd just shot some stills, at least not right off the bat. I'm assuming this might be me memory card speed. I also noticed for the first time the 'mud' everyone is talking about, on wider shots, as I was out in a jungly area with trees and grass. Seemed a bit more than I was expecting despite the stable camera and good exposure. I don't have any unusable footage, but I'd like to try a quicker card!
Yet that's exactly what the Canon engineers said was happening in the 5D Mark II. They specifically recommended to use only UDMA cards because using slower non-UDMA cards, occasional artifacts would crop up.Sorry but from a engineer's point of view I can't help but laugh about this card-mud-relationship theory![]()
The firmware will not measure card throughput and dynamically adjust the encoder to produce optimal results. This is even better than the CMOS fixed pattern burn-in theory
Awesome!
