FS5: Firmware 4.0 Announced with HLG HDR

Since it's an iterative firmware I am assuming it will be free. I really look forward to this as HDR demand from my clients is growing. The big question for me will be how soon Odyssey implements it so that I can record 4K 12 Bit HLG. Mitch?

"The Sony PXW-FS5 and PXW-Z150 will receive the additional HDR capabilities via a software update. For the FS5, HLG will be supported, in addition to S-Log3. The HLG2 mode can be set-up quickly through the option of the newly added picture profile....PXW-FS5 software update V4.0 will be available in July, 2017."

Mitch is not with Convergent Design anymore (and seem to have a bit of a break from this forum, probably to let that fact sink in a bit)

That is good news although I was hoping that Sony would also include an upgrade to the somewhat crippled internal 4k capabilities of the FS5, ie at least 10bit color depth at 25/30p now that we have faster SD cards coming to the market and even consumer cams like the GH5 offer 4k/10bit.

What is HDR HLG ? and does Sony plans to put that on FS7 ?

HLG = Hybrid Log Gamma and is one of the standards for HDR output and display. AFAIK, BBC and NHK were involved in its development. All that has been announced is FS5 and Z150. Nothing has been said about FS7 and I did not get an answer when asked about FS7/FS7 II updates.

I suspect we will hear lots about HDR at this NAB driven in good measure by the relatively inexpensive consumer sets that deliver a "kind of HDR"

Dear Friends,

We are looking into supporting HLG in our Odysseys and Apollos.

We are researching this at this time.

Please note that if I miss a post, please feel free to reach out to me.

The new faster cards wont help with the FS5. To make use of the new UHS-II cards a device would have to have a second row of pin connectors, which the FS5 does not have. I'm afraid that the FS5 is going to be stuck at 8-bit in 4k forever, unless they increase the speed of UHS-I cards, which I doubt is going to happen.

I fully expect that the FS7 will get HLG, and that HLG will be available in whatever shooting modes a camera has, as it doesn't affect the bit rate at all, just the gamma curve.

I hope you are right that the FS7 will get HLG. Since the FS7 has HDMI 2.0a, that is within the HLG spec.

Glad to hear from Dan that CD is exploring Odyssey/Apollo support.

Thats what I fear, looking into alternatives now. Love many things about the FS5 but the 4k sucks. FS7 no option as I need run-n-gun handheld.

Great to hear Dan.
Also great to meet the new Convergent presence.

Just saw on 4kshooters the new Features & Improvements of the firmware v4.0! Good news for us Fs5 users!!

- Support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) by shooting in Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) standard
- Support for continuous 120fps High Frame Rate (HFR) recording in 1080p with CBKZ-FS5HFR (sold separately)
- Option to change the minimum ISO sensitivity number to ISO 2000 from ISO 3200 when recording S-Log2/S-Log3

I'm frustrated the 120fps is paid for, especially considering the cheaper z150 already has this feature. Bleugh.
