Firewire vs usb2

I've always dumped my footage into Final Cut via firewire directly from the camera.
I seem to be having firewire problems so I tried the usb route and to my surprise it off loaded way faster. Any disadvantage doing it this way?

Thanks

i've had the same experience.

and nope. method of transfer has no negative effect. its just a way to get data from here to there.

In the early days, Panasonic specifically recommended that you not use firewire for data transfer on a Windows system, that you only use USB2 on Windows. And for Apple computers, they recommended the opposite.

Sometimes it would work anyway, sometimes it wouldn't. People tried both ways, I can verify that firewire transfer would fail on a Windows system where USB was rock-solid.

However, with the recent products like the HPX300/HPX370 or the HPG20, they don't even support firewire offloading, it's all USB. Perhaps the upgrade to 10.6 makes firewire transferring obsolete and makes USB transfer the preferred method now?

(mac user) the reason i went usb is that i always had issues with the camera actually making the connection via firewire. it would often take me 3 or 4 tries to get the camera to actually connect.

never had a single issue with usb... AND its faster.
- but not on old usb1.0 machines (like a powerbook) that could take an afternoon just for one card ; )

Great news! Thanks guys - I'm now a faster usb2 off loader.
I can't believe I'm happy about a firewire failure. Learn something everyday.
