FireWire Video Recording on DVX with External HDD

DVX Shooters!

A long while back I once saw an ad that runs on the top left corner of this website for services to install a FireWire port to record to an external hard-drive. Has anyone utilize this service? How was it? I can't find their info anymore, does anyone have it?

Please post whenever info you may have to get a DVX100B to record straight to hard-drive.

Thanks!
Carl

Maybe I wasn't clear. I once saw an ad that had a Firewire DV out at the very bottom of a DVX100 which advertised record directly to hard disk. I'm looking for that manufacturer or company so I can record directly to hard disk with my modified DVX.

It's a DV camera, so it's not going to be 4:2:2. I don't think it can be modified for that, either. If it's set to send video to the firewire, it will simply send a signal all the time. Your DVX does not need to have anything that modifies the signal to record video, just a recorder.

Are you talking about REEL/STREAM ? Andromeda Data Acquisition System. They Mod your camera to allow uncompressed vid to harddrive. Rather pricey. But I just checked their site. It is either down or they are no longer operating.

I think he was referring to Andromeda and Iam pretty sure they stopped all together. I remember reading sometime ago that you would achieve a higher quality by skipping the tape and capturing through your NLE. I couldn't find that thread but it seems slightly related to this. Maybe I am thinking of the Andromeda upgrade as well.

Is there any quality loss when video is captured to tape and then captured during playback on a standard DVX (No uprade) in specific but also DV or DV Cam in general?

Is there any advantage to direct capture to laptop or computer via Firewire?

Thanks for any input.

I wouldn't think there would quality loss. I mean it's just one's and zero's. I guess you could have data loss, but not "quality" loss right?

DSTO- That makes sense to me. I think the thread I am thinking of had something to do with 24p or 24pa capture. Maybe that the camera converts it to 29.97 fps when it goes to tape but that step could be skipped if captured directly to the NLE through the firewire.

It's not when it goes to tape; it's before, in order to be written to tape. Whether there's a way to bypass that or not is something I've also wondered. Other than the mod formerly mentioned, I doubt it. Perhaps David or Barry can clarify. I would think that a software update or patch could accomplish this; however, it's probably nonexistent.

Pulldown is inserted into 24p when it's processed into DV. DV is recorded, and DV is sent through firewire. There's no way to bypass it. However, certain live capture programs may allow for on-the-fly pulldown removal as it records. Avid and FCP (24pA, anyway) should do this, for example.
