Firewire not showing DVX100b!!!!

I have a desktop that has 2 firewire ports and neither will show the DVX100b. I hooked up an older canon and it loaded the drivers immediately and no issues. I don't have another computer here to see if the camera is the issue :(
Operating system is XP Pro with an ASUS mother board. When I have the DVX connected and turn off the camera, I hear a chime on the computer saying something has been disconnected.
Could the camera have a firewire setting not set right?

You might have fried your firewire port on the dvx. It happened to me a while back. I just use a separate camera to capture all my footage now.

The computer chime that follows powering off the DVX contraindicates firewire failure.

Start/right-click My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager

See if anything looks odd. Uninstall the DVX if you see it. Plug the 6-pin connector into the computer first. Then the cam's 4-pin. If you wanna be really safe, shut everything off, connect, then fire them up.

YES! my device manager says it has problems...no driver for multimedia audio device. I can't find the driver on line so far :( ASUS no longer has it on their site.

That may or may not not be a part of the problem but it's probably not.

Show it where? What program are you using to capture?

Is the DVX in cam or VCR mode (button left of battery)?

I went to the device manager and it has a yellow icon and in the properties it says there is no driver installed. I tried both camera and VCR. I use Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0.

No driver for what? Multimedia audio device?

I believe you may have hooked up the DVX while it was in CAM mode and the device manager choked. Try uninstalling the multimedia audio device and then re-connecting the DVX (6, then 4) while it's in VCR mode.

Set a system restore backup before this as a precaution.

Honestly, I don't even use my DVX to capture; I use an 8-year old camcorder. If you just want to capture, why not use the older Canon you mentioned? A lot of people do this to save the wear and tear on the DVX's heads.

Cool, I got my little Canon to work.
IF the DVX firewire is fried, how much to have it fixed????
Thanks guys for all the help too!

its pretty expensive...i cant remember but i saw some figures on the site and it wasnt worth it at all over getting a cheap camcorder.

I'm having basically the same problem- but my computer only has the 9 pin firewire port (its one of the new MacBook pro's). My desktop has a 6 pin and captures just fine- is there some reason the 9 pin won't work? Or is it just a problem with drivers?

I still don't think it's toast because your computer responded after unplugging it. If you ever get the chance to hook it up to another computer, please post the result.
