Firewire connection fix FS-100 HVX

might fall under the category of "Ghetto" but it is really solid and I never worry about the firewire popping out.

It is a right angle adapter (rotated right angle when you are searching for one to buy) and a headphone jack splitter. The mini plug is a really tight connection with my adapter and the velcro fills the gap and attaches the two pieces to gether. Very Solid!

It's also handy because an auido guy and the camera operator can listen to their own headphones. Let me know what you think...

You can also see my method for tracking batteries (fake patent pending.)
I love velcro, excuse me, hook and loop.

Simple, tidy AND functional. Very cool. The only question I have is how much pressure is being put on the two jacks? In your smaller photo it almost appears as though the headphone splitter is slightly angled thereby causing pressure to be placed on the jacks. Or is that an optical illusion?

That seems like a nice solution nice guy, but consider this as an alternative:

the difference is that the headphone jack and the FireWire Jack are acting as one unit. I can only assume that it would be a little more stable than your setup. and you can get a y-splitter cable off of the 1/4" jack.

Don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but just wanted to suggest it.

Thanks,
Luis

:kali: Stick em up High Jacker!!

What I do like about this concept vs the one you have created is that this idea is substantially lower in profile. If you could get yours down to his size I would likely buy one of yours.

Now that you have me thinking about it...

What about using both a right angle headphone mini-jack and a right angle firewire cable. Then run them through your rubber connector? This would cut down on the size of the rubber connector hanging off the camera.

Well, I'd have to see about those right angle connectors. As for the small profile, you can always cut the rubber connector with a nice Ginsu 2000 knife. (remember those. hahahha) I thought about making the rubber connector for a right angle cable, but then I and everyone else would have to buy a right angle cable. I for one already have (3) 4pin FW to 6pin FW cables at different lengths. and also (2) 4pin FW to 4pin FW at different lenghts.

I have a short cable for when the FS-100 mounts to the camera shoulder mount. and Longer cables when I want to connect to my computers or my regular external hd to my computers.

That's why I didn't go the Right angle cable solution. Plus I thought most people would not have the right angle cable but they would the regular cable.
If I remember correctly the cables alone are $29 + shipping. (correct me if I'm wrong here)

I'd be happy to design and get you a rubber connector (maybe the FWS-02) for your right angle and the headphone jack, but it would cost between $80-100 for the prototype.

yeah there is a bit of tension causing the head phone jack to angle. It actualy works better with some of my other firewire cables but the right angle makes more sense to me.

No. They are still shipping with the standard cable. The right angle is an add-on.

I just verified my latest info with Focus. They are in fact shipping FS-100's now WITH a right angled 4-ping Firewire cable as a standard part of the product.

I just bought the FS-100 last week. I see that the Right Angle is going to the FS and still has a straight 4pin to the camera. ALso, the cable is way to short to attach the firestore to your belt so the belt connector is useless.

So you got one that sat in a warehouse since before they went with the proper cable. The one that comes with it is for mounting on the camera.

Of course you will want to get more than just one.

I bought a collection of cables, 1 ft, 3 ft, 6 ft, 10 ft. You should have a variety of lengths, not just one.

I don't think the belt clip is useless.

It just can't be used with the shipped cable. I have four cables and sometimes use the belt clip with a few of them

BenB,

So I guess it would be safe to say that you are wired?

:cheesy:
After this past weekend, worse than you know...

The belt clip is actually super valuable to me. I use it in a variety of situations, just not to hang off my belt. I love it with the CineSaddle (best support gear money I ever spent, hands down), which is my most favorite rig to shoot with: HVX, FS-100, CineSaddle. I fill th CineSaddle pockets with extra batteries along with beef jerky, two cokes, a flask of American Sour Mash, and my iPod. And a pack of matches for when I get board...

If you've never taken a CineSaddle to a shoot, especially where the environment is not "tripod friendly", you have no idea what you're missing! I believe even Trailer Park Boys do half their shots of a CineSaddle and MiniSaddle.

Love the CineSaddle. Some DIY'ers gripe that it's $300 for a bean bag, and I say "so? The thing works." I saw that Abel Cine Tech is even carrying them now!
