Firestore Update?

I'm anxiously awaiting the release of the FS-100 (or the cineporter, but I think it's much further away) and was hoping somebody here might have some info. on when exactly it is going to be released. I'm trying to steer clear of the P2 cards because they hold so little footage. Anybody have any updates on the Firestore system and when it is going to finally be released?

I don't think you'll see the Cineporter much before late Spring or early summer.

And remember that 24pn, I don't believe, will be supported by at least the Firestore.

Darn. But I still need it. Any word on a release date?

Also, are there any other solutions (other than P2)? I read of the more innovative users manufacturing their own drives or running directly into an external drive, but for some reason I am wary of that. I need to shoot a program in DVCPro HD in the beginning of May.

Actually at the 4EVER Group convention in Disney World last January, Citidisk had a version for DVCPRO-HD that should already be out, and do 24p. Cost less than Firestore.

However, it does not support direct to disc recording, as I understand it.

How do you review your footage from the Firestore? Will you be able to view it on the LCD? Or plug it into a monitor?

an email from the company itself:

Hello,
the FS-100 will encode the video stream to a file using the DV video input from the camera.

To answer the question on playback from FS-100 to the camera, see below:

This is a good question.

The reason is that on the HVX 200 when you put the camera into VTR mode for playback the lcd on the camera shows the thumbnail screen.

When playing back files from the FS100 the user must first put the camera into VTR mode then press the thumbnail button near the menu button on the camera. Then they are free to playback from the FS100 into the camera

The answer is yes you can playback into the camera EVF or LCD

Thanks,

Jim

Thanks very much for that reply, that is great news. This was a concern of getting the HVX with Firestore, but if you can review your footage with the camera then that is superb. Checking and reviewing footage is really important for our needs.

Workflow using this would be highly desirable for both filmmaking and event coverage.

I don't like this bit, will the MXF files be lost, is there generation loss? But I don't think so, otherwise the thumbnail function would not work, right?

Mxf is a file format or a wrapper. You don't have these with plain datastream like the one you get out from hvx in rec mode.

Btw, is it possible to use Firestore just for file transfer from p2?
