Firestore FS160?

I just noticed that the Hitachi 2.5" 160GB 5400rpm (perpendicular recording) drive is already for sale ($300):

This may be the one that Spec-Comm intends to use in the 160GB Cineporter. I read somewhere that due to the perpendicular recording, the speed is higher than that of a regular 5400rpm drive. Hopefully it is sufficient for DVCPRO 100.

Since this hard drive is available, if it is fast enough, it should be easy for Focus Enhancements to offer a Firestore FS160 with a 160GB capacity, shouldn't it? That would be quite attractive.

I'd rather just wait for the cineporter since it's actually MADE to work with the camera. My film school is shooting their spring film using a firestore hooked up to a DVX100A and it's causing so many problems. We're getting drop frames everywhere and wierd artifacts in some areas that aren't there on our tapes (you have to have tapes in to get it to work!).

that's interesting to know. The firestore in my opinion is very OVERPRICED. I think they should reconsider their price point. Yes, i understand that it's a new product and they could go-to-market at this point due to limited market options BUT as they say "If you live by the sword, you die by the sword"

someone soon is going to surprise us with a superior product at a decent pricepoint. When that INEVITABLE day happens, we will say bye bye to Firestore if they're still playing at their Jaquar prices with internal bugs.

I wonder if that will fit into my P2 store.... hummmm

AS far as the firestore being overpriced?
If they can get it to ingest 1080p, that will be quite an acheivement.
Not only does the drive have to be fast enough, but the other components do as well. It's not out yet because it is not an easy thing to do, and they will want to re-coup all the time invested to make it happen.

This the first time I hear that the Firesore is unreliable. I had heard otherwise in the past. Did anybody else experience problems with the Firestore, or is this an isolated case?

I've had some weird things with my Firestore, but nothing too tragic. It is noisy when it gets warm, which is the biggest drawback.

The main thing about the firestore that might keep me from buying one again (except for the high price) is that it doesn't inspire confidence. Because it does odd, non-repeating things from time to time I'm always nervous that my footage is even being recorded. So far, so good, but it's still a scary thing, but so if shooting film.

How much will the Firestore be going for? I thought just around $1800

How much 720p footage can the Cineporter drive hold? and when will the cineporter be out? I am going to be producing a Documentary in Brasil this summer, and I trying to figure out the best options.
Ciao,
Ben

my 2 cents, I've used the Firestore FS-4 quite a bit and it has been very reliable. As far as intermittent problems, I guess you'd have to be more specific. Maybe you are doing something I haven't tried?
