Firestore FS-100 viewing clips?

Hi there,
We're shooting a low budget feature and are looking at ways to get a video assist. What we've got at the moment is the HVX200, a Firestore FS-100, and an 8gb P2 Card for backup incase we lose the Firestore. So basically what I was wondering was whether there was any way to view the clips that have been shot that day on the firestore directly of the device itself, maybe so if we had the camera plugged into a monitor we could view them there, like you could with a P2 card? If not, what would be the easiest solution? A cheap PC with some sort of software on it? Is it possible to view the clips at all without having to organise the reels and upload it onto FCP? We have a Mac that we could use, but in terms of cost, a cheap PC would be ideal if it could do the job.

Edit:
Also, I've been taking a look at scopebox, however we're probably going to be shooting in 720p, and it doesn't seem to work with that, only 1080p/i? Also, do you know if there is any way to record onto the Firestore while viewing what is being shot on scopebox? If not, do you think it would be better to shoot straight onto laptop rather than Firestore? Any pro's and con's to either?

Thanks

On the FS-100 side of things, you can playback clips recorded on FS-100 through the cameras viewfinder, but not out of the cameras HD component out...this is disabled on the HVX for playback of FireWire inputs. But, I do believe it is possible to view your clips from the cameras S-Video out (down-converted).

Hope that helps,

Matt

ScopeBox is nice, I'm testing it out now. Really nice for playback. You could plug the DV Firewire port from the FS-100 to your laptop, launch ScopeBox, and get larger screen playback. Like I said, I'm testing it out now, and so far, so good.

not able to playback clips

not able to playback clips

Just got my FireStore FS100, and having real difficulty connecting it with the HVX. The FS-100 manual does not say much, and I followed everything that's in the manual.
1. The recording takes a while to stop. Is that normal?
2. Unable to view clips through camera. Tried every possible setting. What am I doing wrong?
3. FS100 is in Syncro Mode (that's right?). It constantly resets itself to "Local".

Is there a better (than the manual) step-by step guide anywhere here on how properly connect and setup this rig?

Many thanks in advance.

1- It takes a few seconds to compile the data. Notice the progress bars going across the screen. The longer you recorded, the longer it will take to compile and reset for the next recording session.

2- Do like you normally do to see clips on the HVX, BUT you turn off thumbnails with that button on top of the HVX, then hit Play on the FS. The FS will play back as you have it set to play back.

3- Nope, very wrong. Tapeless mode.

Yes, my video which I start taking orders for on Feb. 5th. See link below for my tutorials.

1. Ok, I get it

2. Thanks!

3. Does not seems to connect in tapeless mode. Only in Syncro mode I can use HVX's record button to record clips. Also, why does the manual say that there need to be a tape in the HVX in order for the tapeless mode to work?

It HAS to connect in Tapeless mode. I don't have it in front of me at the moment, but when I do, I'll PM you.

Set your HVX to 1394 EXT control. FS-100 to tapeless. There are two menus-- Control and Function. Both of those have tapeless options and you should set both of those accordingly. Let Ben or me know if you continue to have problems with it.

It is as Ben and Ned have pointed out.

Remember, the Other function in the HVX menu is set to external or both.

And the FS-100 must have both control/function set to tapeless.

I always reformat after each shoot as well.

Thank you gentlemen! The camera is out on a rental until Monday, I'll get back to you here in case I will have the problem still.

Cheers!

Jimmy,

Are you trying to use ScopeBox with 720p PAL or NTSC? NTSC should work just fine. If you're having problems, please feel free to contact me directly at mike@divergentmedia.com so I can help you work things out.

Oh, here's what I've reverted to in getting clips off P2 cards and the FS-100 that FCP claims are corrupt. Capture those clips live.

Just some FS-100 trivia, if you connect the FS to your Mac via the FS's "DV" firewire port, hit Play on the FS, it'll feed the clips in just like a camera or deck would. "Uncontrolable Device", poof, you're capturing live. Or with something like ScopeBox, see your clips in full rez HD playback on your laptop.
