Finally saw GH2 footage first hand.. I am not upgrading. Staying with GH1.3

Looking at that gh2 footage I can honestly say I have not seen any gh13 footage look that sharp. I'm very tempted to pic up one of these.

All though the gh2 may not be useful to some, some will see this cam as very useful if not better for their purposes than the hacked gh1.3, not to say the hacked gh1 isn't good as well. I myself like the sharpness and look of the gh2 in low light better.

Are you cuckoo for cocoa puffs? That 720p footage is blurry and artifacted as all hell.... are you sure you are not talking about the Gunther Manchu 1080 24p footage I just posted? which was shot on a GH1 hacked.. not a GH2.

If not.. it's time to put those contacts back in.

I have one on pre-order cause there are just too many new features to pass up...but I am keeping my GH13 and if I'm not happy with the GH2 image I'll probably sell it (GH2.) But I am looking forward to getting mine. I've shot a lot of work I'm proud of on my pre-hack GH1 and a lot after the hack. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the new camera.

I don't want to bash your new toy... but if it is the same as what I saw and you compare your hack footage to gh2 footage I think e-bay's going to be seeing a listing... hold on to that gh13

and then we have the AF-100 coming out... I find it odd they are even making a GH2... but anyway - this is what I saw and no, I was not allowed to put in my own SD card and take footage away with me or I absolutely would have done that.

The problem I have with mentioning the AF-100 in the same sentence as the GH-1, is that they are really targeting different markets... for $4-5K I can by 3 or so GH-1/2's... Further, one of the things that you mention 'aliasing', the AF-100 has a low pass optical filter no doubt, that in hardware 'softens' the image to reduce jagged lines. There may be some image processing as well... but I kind of doubt there's much...

I wonder why there hasn't been a DSP maven that has a anti-aliasing plug-in for the popular NLE's... how about an open source version...

As for the codec performance.... well, sure, using the GH-13 hack at higher bitrates, it will most likely 'out perform' something at 24 Mbs, unless there's something 'more' going on...

But for people who have not implemented the hack... the GH-2 will most likely give benefit...

It's sort of like if you put a blower on your engine, redo the heads, use nitro based fuel... in a word, make your automobile as 'non-stock' as possible... it won't compare with the next new thing running off the assembly line... fortunate for you, bitrates are not a regulated entity, so you don't have to try to make your camera 'street legal' when you take it out in public...

Ben: Obviously you did not read any of my posts. Of course it was 1080p. That is the only way I shoot. I am a 'huge' display person.... 720p looks blurry to me on all my 1080p monitors..and again, I hate the look of 'conformed 60p to 24p motion.. it's stroby and ugly to me... the only person who has made it look good is Jack Stanely and he uses it sparingly and does some crazy processing.. (see the other thread on best way to display GH1 footage.. I show some of my setup) I only use 720 for medium to close up slow mo or news style interview talking head work for TV shows.

Clark: As I said.. the GH2 footage was better than the GH1 standard unhacked footage. But that's it.... the GH1.3 jobless D cams (I have 3) were a LOT better than the GH2 footage I saw.. shot a lot of central park stuff.. and wide shots of NYC skyline. No question the GH1.3 performed better - looked better.

does anyone know if the gh2 does slow mo at 1080p? Even if not the lowlight capability is enough to warrant the upgrade.

I guess if you just need a couple of seconds of slo-mo you could use the 40fps burst rate and convert it to video (looking at the burst rate images at all sizes it appears to be using the 1080 video processing routine, so apparently the sensor is theoretically capable of 1080p/40)

As for the GH2 not being so sharp, these are some frame grabs from cinema mode, no alterations just brought into photoshop and resaved so their file size would stay under 1MB...

I did not say it was not sharp. I said it broke down and had artifacts in high motion detail just like the unhacked GH1, only not as bad. It looked very good with little motion. Shoot wide, daytime, and post the mts file PLEASE not stills if you have the camera!

Thanks for posting those images, richtrav! Looks very good to me, almost like still images that haven't been downscaled.

Blackout, if the GH2 produces a considerably better image in terms of sharpness (which ALL the samples seem to say), then it's always possible to couple it up with an HDMI recorder, which would squash the GH13, probably.

As for 720p being fuzzy... on the GH1, I think it wasn't resolving as much detail as it could (it was probably SD res), but have you seen 720p samples from the GH2? They're amazingly sharp! It's unfair if you compare 720p to 1080p calling it 'burry', anyway, as OF COURSE it's going to not hold as much detail as it's a lower resolution.

In my eyes, 720p is going to be quite useful, especially when YouTube goes 60p. Not everything has to be 24p you know. :) I'd find it most exciting to watch a film that has been shot at 60p (I think it's going to be the film format of the future... but that's another thread).

... I am not allowed to say by who or how... and perhaps there will be improvements before actual release date, but as of now, I am not satisfied and am not upgrading. There is still mud, noise, streaking and issues with 24 mbit..........

The problem is nobody will believe it until we have seen it with our own eyes. Actually you should have known that before posting this kind of stuff. So, what could be the purpose + aim for this acting?

He's not asking anyone to believe it - just giving his opinion based on what he's seen.

It's all useful information and makes me glad I've got a second hackable GH1 body.

Thanks for posting Blackout.

I believe it. Don't be so bloody ungrateful!

It is obvious that a lot of GH2 pre order peeps are now suffering the common cognitive disonance of 'post purchase rationalisation'. This is natural - but not helpful. By all means remain sceptical, but don't dismiss usefui well presented information.

check out this clip blackout and tell me if it is similar to what you filmed or sighted. its a pretty good codec stress test this clip, alot of detail, moving leaves. I was surprised how well the leaves held up, i saw more evident mud in the faces of the riders riding by right at the start than the moving leaves themselves. Im guessing this is a japanese gh2 released production body though not too sure.

At the original downloaded mts file I can´t recognize any mud:

see the faces of the guys on the bikes...they block out as they ride across. I mean the scene in general is quite resilient, you really have to hunt for it to see it and that was the only obvious bit i could pick from it. no one would pick up on it in real time =) might just be artifacts in underexposed areas?
