Finally it's show-n-tell time!!!

Ban Me Please!
Hello all. After so long I finally have something to show.

I just started a company with a couple of talented guys in the Phoenix area and we're working on building a reel, so we thought we'd put together some spec commercials to test out our new equipment as I come from a film background and have now moved into video with the DVX. I can tell you after watching somebody else use the DVX and now having used it once myself, I'm in love. I'll always love film, but for now my budget says DVX all day long and I'm not worried about it.

Please check out the spec at www.bigbrainpictures.com/sunshine and let us know what you think.

We'll have a couple more specs to post over the next couple months and then we're on to two features later this year, mostly due to the low operating cost and high performance of the DVX.

Thanks,

Jason Francois

Good job guys.

Thanks everybody.

We did come up with the concept ourselves. I have a ton of spec commercial concepts that I've written. Unfortunately, because of time and money we are going to have to pick the most affordable to do for our reel.

Great job on the spec commercial; very filmic and a nice representation of the DVX. Wonderfully colored and comp'd as well. And a model that actually looks hot compared to some of these you see whereas it looks like someones sister. As much as I enjoyed the eye candy of the woman (and I did) perhaps it would have been better to showcase the car (and her at the same time?). I never really got the feeling it was a 'mini' spec. What I getting at is; for a MINI spec commercial it felt more like a Gap or Jeans ad. Next time try and showcase the product a little more while keeping the dame in the picture.

I think technically you naiuled it; conceptually it falls short.

IMHO

..i'll second what hudson said. IMHO the product was left in the shadows behind the characters in the spot. theres nothing in the commercial that would make a woman want a mini at all, and the guys watching it are probably not left thinking about the car. as a comedical concept it worked, but as a strong sales pitch to make someone want the car it was lacking.

..anyway, visually it was technically good. the story was communicated well, and it was a good peice. but as john said the concept as a commercial falls short.

Thanks John. That's funny a Jean commercial comes up often!! I guess it makes sense since we have a hot girl in low-rise jeans. I'm just glad that we didn't have time to do the lower "butt-shot" since it really would have looked like a jean commercial :)

I did have more "product shots" planned, but we lost a couple of hours of our day light and they were the first to go. That's not an excuse, but it's how we ended up having to do it. It's something I've been trying to figure in my mind....and that's how I would have incorporated more product in the shoot. Good thing I love the learning process.

Thanks again,

Jason

I guess you posted this just as I was responding to John, so I guess it could be mostly the same response.

I understand what's being said. I guess I'm just glad that we were really going for irony as well as figuring out how to use all our new toys.

All the great responses I'm getting are definitely NOT falling on deaf ears, because I figure I'll be learning up until the day I die and I'm always trying to make stuff as good as I can. Plus, this kind of feedback is even better considering that I will need to keep these things in mind if I ever get a chance to do work for actual clients, which is what I would hope for in the future.

Thanks again guys and keep it coming.

Best regards,

Jason

totally, .. most "clients" have no idea what good marketing is, and unless you know how to sell their product, they will have a spot which .. well ...doesnt sell anything. they are happy just to have their name on the tv and their product shown and have something interesting happen in their commercial. but when they find out that the sales figures are saying the commercial isnt heloing anything they get jaded to using TV spots to market their services or product. .. most cable and local stations have already taken the liberty of putting a bad taste in your future clients mouths, regarding ROI on their commercial investments, so IMHO the strongest thing you can have in your corner is a trail of sales/attendance/whatever records or testamonials from former clients showing how much business your services brought them. it is also the among the strongest reepeat business attractors you could have. because in the end its not about how cool or funny or interesting or action packed the spot was, or even how much the client liked it as a spot.. its about how much business it generated.

on a recent spot i did the client made a few request changes to it that i thought took the production value of the spot down, BUT.. ..biug but there...lol he knew his client base, and thought putting in some more selling points instead of some flashy animation effect stuff would generate more business. of course i said "no- problem" and did it. but i didnt like taking out a cool effect part.. but all in all.. its about the business , and everything else comes after. it was hard for me personally to let some of my work go from the spot. but ..it reminded me that just like in a film where content is king.. in a commercial.. product or service or whatever your selling is king. so when making a film .. concentrate on content/story. and commercial concentrate on thing your selling or advertising for best results.

that all changes pending the product dynamics though.. like if you were advertising for coca-cola.. you could likely shoot a car the whole time and then say "coca cola" at the end, and it might work because everyone knows it already.

....aaaaanyway. the spot was great. just the advertising part that needed some flavor added. IMHO

IAMLOSER thanks again for taking the time to share your knowledge. I enjoy input from people with a lot of passion and you definitely seem to care about what you're doing.

Cheers,

Jason

nice job guys.
I´ve noticed a little technical problem with the lens or the filter, couldn´t recognize the source, in one of the low dolly scenes at the begining. I mean, you can see a black vertical line on your right. Just check it out and maybe fix it, so I can hire you...(just kidding!)

Congrats!!

hey man it looks great. i agree that i could have had a little more sheet metal porn. but its still a great effort. congrats man...

what was your budget?
how much did the model cost?

"sheet metal porn"... I just about aspirated a mouthful of Grey Goose vodka.

Thanks folks. I will look a what's going on with the edge of the frame. Tomorrow I will be able to watch it on the TV at the office and see if I can see what ABALEX is talking about. There were a few technical things that cropped up, that nobody's mentioned that I won't bring up at this point. Nothing that doesn't happen even in paid products.

The total cost was a bit over a grand, but that's not including that we bought insurance for the whole year and such. As far as Blanche's price I'd rather not say, except that she took pitty on us and did it for a fraction of her day rate. Never underestimate the indie filmmaking ploy of straight pitty. :)

Rich, I just have to say that you set the bar high with your efforts. We are technically a ways away from achieving what you did on your music video, but we'll keep trying :)

Jason-
I don't want to be cliche' here and mention the model in your commercial but my loins give me no choice. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!?!?! She was beyond hot! Now that I've vented that...on to the spot...
Excellent. Some have mentioned the sales aspect...intergrating the car more...and it is all very good advice. But, I really like the flow, the concept and looks. Makes me wonder how I can see this video of yours that everyone is talking about? I am brand new to DVXuser (planning to purchase a DVX next Friday, God willing) so I am out of the loop. Do you have a link for your video? I'd love to see it.
