Finally got out to shoot with the Lumix G X 12-35

Erik, not that I wasn't already sold on the lens, but that video sealed the deal. Great looking footage. As soon as a couple of contracts for upcoming projects get signed, this lens is going into my little bag of goodies.

Does anyone know when the 35-100 will be released into the wild?

Most I've heard is "fall 2012". Probably in testing... A guy over at m43 user had analyzed some OMD- shot Olympic footage with EXIF data reading some suspect lengths and speeds (ie 63mm f3.2 or some such)

Edit: make that mu-43, a G5, and f3.5@64mm with a G lens

How are the ergonomics of the lens, specially the focus ring? Are there stops or is it free spinning? I have a Tokina 16-50 which has stops at each end of the focus range, but the big problem I have with that lens is that there is virtually no focus ring rotation from 7ft to infinity. As you can imagine that makes getting sharp focus a challenge and just forget about any rack focus at that range.

These new m4/3 lenses look fantastic. Lets hope Panasonic keeps the products with this mount strong. I'm liking what I'm hearing from the GH3 rumours seems like a real ground breaker for HDSLR. Hope Panasonic gets their act together on the pro end though. The AF100 is still one of the best bangs for the buck and I'd like to see that tradition continued.

But Canon crippled the HDMI output not to compete with the C300.

?? How so? Clean HDMI out at 422 8bit.

Focus is free spinning, and the aperture is controlled with the thumb wheel on the camera, so it is not a manual lens in any sense - however, that said, it communicates really well with the camera and if you rethink your shooting a little it is very handy to use. By "rethink" I mean let the camera do more of the work - as an old film person I am not a fan of auto anything, but with this lens you can use the function toggle to adjust where in the frame the lens focuses and sets aperture. hit "push to focus" and momentarily activate auto exposure. It is very fast and intuitive once you adapt.

Of course you can always focus and adjust aperture conventionally as well, and the focus rotation is way better than the Tokina. The 12-35 is also noticeably sharper.

I just tested the lens for a few questions that was asked. Unfortunately no repeatable focus. I tested the lens with a Tilta follow focus that has two hard stops. The focus never repeated between them. Also it’s not a servo style zoom. I got a exposure stutter when preforming a slow push/pull. Don’t know why it’s doing that but I think this is a very electronic lens and things are going on in the lens to keep the iris constant throughout the range. The lens does hold focus when changing focal range.

Really? I stand corrected then. I guess I thought it outputted 10bit because of it's price and the fact rivals in the same price range such as the F3 output 10bit.
There are very, very, very few cameras that output 10-bit. At the C300 price point or lower, I think the entire list of cameras on the planet that output 10-bit are: F3, EX1R/EX3, HPX250, HPX370. That's it. C300 is most definitely 8-bit output.

Disappointing. Wish I understood why on the focus issue. Anyway I tried the 12-35 on both the AF-100 and GH-2 on a job recently--and got the cameras to match pretty well BTW thanks to Barry's settings on another thread. And with an unhacked GH-2. It's a bit of a mind-**** to work with AutoF after being used to the alternatives, and with 2 different cameras back and forth. Glad I'm editing the footage if you know what I mean. But the lens does look very very good and I was able to get away with decent handheld GH-2 work without an EVF or stabilizer, just a flash bracket handle I think it's called, and some bifocals for better view of the LCD screen. Haven't sprung for the "universal" handheld rig yet that I'm looking for though your postings on the issue have led me to get close. Thanks for that too.

I went back and shot some interiors of the mission and re-editing the lens test with the footage. All natural light inside and not very bright so I shot everything at f2.8 at ISO 800. I’m a little surprised how nice the shots look. This has been a fun test shoot!
I might have enough to actually do a little story on the mission now. Great feature about Vimeo is being able to replace a video with a updated edit.

I iwsh there was an easy way to focus pull like software based.

I guess the onky way to monitor focus is baes on the distance number shown in screen
