Finally got out to shoot with the Lumix G X 12-35

I remember the old Z1U had such a feature (changing focus point, gain, etc with a programmable button). A bit clunky, but it did work.

I also shot a sample of the flicker that happens during zooms.

Erik, can you post that shot somewhere? It's really the last thing holding me back from buying this lens as I do a fair ammount of snap zooms in my shooting. If it's similar to the 7-14 then I can handle that as it's pretty minimal, but if it's like the 14-140, Then that's gonna break my heart.

Snap zooms look weird. The image goes out of focus in a strange way in the snap. Nothing like an ENG lens look.

Yes I noticed the snap zoom issues too. My answer to tacotim is that it's not as noticeable as with the 14-140. Erik is doing a careful look though and it's definitely not the ENG lens snap-zoom look that I wish was an option too. When I get the 12-35 back, I'm gonna see what happens when I snap without AFocus. Was AFocus on dutring your snaps Erik?

I dug around a bit on youtube today and found a few zooms here and there. What I saw was not ideal, but it's workable. I think the losing focus momentarily during zooms thing is just a part of the way all panasonic m43 lenses work, some worse than others, this one seems pretty reasonable to me, If I was king of the world I'd make this lens a 12-50 with hard stops on the focus ring, but since i'm not king, i'll be stoked to have this lens as the go to handheld documentary lens, replacing my 16-50 2.8.

Here is a sample of the flicker when performing a zoom. It's subtle but to me not usable.

Thanks Erik for taking the time to post this--it just means to me that you eliminate that kind of shot which is too bad, but...

If you have a chance, could you respond about whether the focus thing on a snap zoom happened in AFoocus mode? I'll answer that myself but don't have the lens right now

Today I stumbled upon this review on YouTube (the 12-35 on a GH2): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPtcCvz9CME

At 1:50 you can see some zooms. Surprisingly there's no strange zoom flickering like in your example video, Erik. So personally I think (and hope) that this is something that occurs in combination with the AF100 exclusively and can be fixed with a lens firmware update.

Went to watch the video but the link is broken. I need to get my GH2 out and see if this is the case.

Don't know why the software rates the link as spam, but you can copy it to the clipboard and paste it into your browser. Then remove this part: "ADMIN NOTE: I AM SPAM. PLEASE REPORT ME." This should work.

Thank you for looking into it, Erik. I also like the 12-35 very much, but I don't have a GH2 to do some further testing.

That link even when edited doesn't work.

The exact video-title on YouTube is: "Panasonic Lumix X 12-35mm Power O.I.S. Review" (author: frugalfilmmakers).

The interesting part with the zooms starts at 1:37 and ends at 2:38.

Just got mine and I'm quite happy with the results until now (although I have aperture clicks when I'm in movie mode and not filming) especially the OIS is magic !
Had the SLR Magic 12 mm before and I really loved the look and feel and the flares of that lens but it was soft as hell in certain areas, so I returned it.

Did a quick test with the Pana :

Beautiful, wondered if you were using autofocus to set focus or did all manual, and if you were at the longer end to get such pronounced bokeh.
I used the lens on this--on both the AF-100 and the GH-2. Wanted the 35-100 for the interview shot, but wasn't avail then.
