Finally got out to shoot with the Lumix G X 12-35

Nice grabs Erik, you too, dusty. 12-35 looks nice!

dusty- what's your lighting ? And you do architectural photography, right?

Erik- look forward to your edit.
Yes, I specialize in architectural photography. Custom homes, residential homes, hotels, and large space, and an occasional restaurant (they just don't pay well). I call it archi-torture photography. going on my 23rd year in the field.

Lighting for that frame grab was a single 1600 watt fluorescent bank. A cheap ass Chinese one but has the same bulbs at any Kino-flo. Paid $285 for it.

For lighting arch, I use strobes. Speedotron system and some other off brands that I color correct to the speedos with rosco gel (total about 50-60 light sources). I also carry tungsten kit for shots were there is high end lighting design . I shot Caesars Palace high rollers suites for the cover of the Robb Report for example (maybe 40 light sources). THen I have the fluorescent kit. (four 6 banks, two 4 banks, and six 2 banks: http://www.amazon.com/Ardinbir-Studio-6-Bank-Fluorescent-Diffuser/dp/B004QV3J02/ref=pd_sim_sbs_p_3). Then I have some LED's but have moved away from them because the CRI.

Most of my arch work resembles stuff like this:10-The Hill-Combo Rear Elevation.jpg02-The Grove-P2_family Room.jpg

I don't understand all the jumping ship. The AF100 is still unmatched at its price point.

I'm running an AF100 with just the Nokton 25mm 0.95 and this new 12-35 and an external recorder and don't see any reason to move on for a while.

If you're doing high budget filmmaking, I can completely understand wanting more.

I've seen this kind of thing on other forums, mainly Corvette forums where the owners want to move up to Vipers because the Vette is no longer fast enough. We always want more :D

It's incrementalism... some folks only choose to/can afford to upgrade for a major advance (Hi-8->DV, SD->HD, small sensor->large sensor, 1080->4K, etc). Others spend a lot more money to get relatively minor improvements here and there every time something new appears. It works for some people, it doesn't work for others, and others still pretend it works for them when they're really just going deep into debt.
Oh so true... should be your sig!

Yes we do! This has been an amazing year for digital cinema. Cameras these days are all fricken great! No excuses anymore. If you want to create you have so many choices to create your vision at an insanely low price. Pick your hardware and go!

Woof, those stills are sharp. Nice going dustylense and Erik. Not this month, but next for me (need another lav). It's a great investment for the AF100 and GH2. Needs me one of these!

We're always looking at the next camera. I can't help it. I guess the best testimony is that with all the new cameras out this year these pro shooters are still investing in glass for and shooting great stuff with the AF100. I'm always happy that I have it when looking at the latest(s). I haven't seen anything close to it at the price point. Things don't fundamentally change for me until you get into F3/Scarlet range, oh and FS100 if you can use that burst. Otherwise I'm hanging with AF100 and m4/3.

Gorgeous stills, dusty!

I always envied stills working with strobes vs constant lighting for video.

And great arch photography (such as yours) always seems to excel in finding the perfect spot/angle/focal length.

I know some even do measurements- do you know the work of Steven Brooke?

Again, great stuff!

As for critiquing current, and even future, non-existent cameras, I have to share this from the C100 thread- a hilarious MUST READ!!!
It's the Post of the Year. No, decade. No, millenium!!! (insert any timeframe here)

We now return you to Erik's previously scheduled 12-35 thread...

Nice, Erik. Thanks for adding the fstops and focal lengths. 12mm at 5.6 is crazy sharp and didn't show a lot of distortion at all. At least not to my eye. It seemed that it held focus well from end to end and looks beautiful at 35mm. Hmmm... may have be be a CC purchase for this shoot next week. Did you use the push focus at all? Not bad lens flares. ;)

Added the test video to the original post.

Enjoy!

Wow Erik! Just gorgeous! I just added that to my list of favorite AF100 footage in my thread. I think people complaining about the sharpness in the AF100 either have an eye sight problem or bad lenses. This looks very sharp to me as far as 1080p goes.
Any chances of sharing your settings?

By the way, that's you? I've been watching some of your gear reviews on vimeo. Man, has anybody ever told you that you look, sound and move like George Clooney?

I didn't use the push to focus feature. I forgot to test it. I did use the feature on a couple other shoots and it worked very well. The range is so great! Buy it!

yep, I'm in on m4/3. It will go nice on the GH2 which I love for stills and thanks to lpowell and barry's posts, as a b cam for the AF100. How would the 12-35 do with a follow focus? How much throw? Hard stops?

Erik just got the new Tilta FF with hard stops. I'm sure the FF on this lens would not work as a cinema lens, but with hard stops you should get repeatable throws.

I havent tested the Tilta on any lenses yet so I can't comment on repeatable focus with the new 12-35 but a feature I like most is the adjustable drag. When the thumb screw is tight it acts like a break and you get a smooth dampening. When unscrewed it feels like a cine style almost free wheel rotation. This makes it very versatile for both cine and SLR lenses.
