FINALLY!! AF100 HACK Pledge

imo it's a balancing act. Some of these might have been answered, I can't see any.

Has anyone contacted Vitaliy to find out if he can be persuaded for $$$$$ or can he recommend another? Has he already tried it? Is it already a non event?
How long might it take? Is he too busy? Who'll test the beta versions? Is Pana now blocking hacks on models?

Cheers.

Thanks... its jut that I once asked that and someone replied that it was impossible to get 4:2:2 out of an AF100. Not even with an external recorder... So practically, If you buy the Samurai, you have a "hacked" af100???
Yes. Whoever said you can't get 4:2:2 was talking out of the wrong end of his digestive tract.

YES... Definitely I would consider putting up the 3,000 but no one has answered my question. I want to know what would the difference be between the hack and an atomos samurai??? AND, Is the hack really doable or is it just some guajiro dream???
Nobody really knows. Vitaliy says he can do it, Jan says he can't. I would be inclined to believe the manufacturer, but then again, nobody expected the kind of changes Vitaliy was able to wreak on the GH1 and GH2, so ...

No, nobody really, truly knows. And if the only thing that gets 'hacked' is an improved codec, you could already get all those benefits from a Samurai (plus 110% reliability, redundant recording, etc). So hopefully there would be other things possible in this proposed firmware hack, including magnified focus assist maybe... anyway, it is absolutely all speculation at this point.

.

I dropped Driftwood's V1.1 "Orion" Patch today, not sure if I'm just high or crazy, but where everyone said V9b was the pinnacle of what the camera was capable of... I think he just stepped over said upper limit. X_x The stuff coming off of this camera is kind of confusing.

I'd give 3 Sir John Houblon's (got to take dollar/sterling exchange into account) for 10-bit 422 50mbit, with the ability to design my own LUTs for the scene files.

(had to google him and never heard of him before - he's the flip side to the queen)

Thank you very much Barry... I got it now. Im going for the Samurai... Really appreciate your input!!! :)

when did Vitaliy ACTUALLY say he could hack the AF100?? (apart from that bloody brilliant April fools day joke?) - let's not start building anticipation for vapourware.

and starting a donation page (in this particular situation) ain't quite as easy as it sounds.

It is not vaporware. We have odds of 100:1 from Kenny G that the hack is executable. That makes it a lock. :)

I'm wondering what a hack could actually do. Here's my thinking.. which could be wrong, of course.
The GH2 was built for stills and video, so it stands to reason that the OLP filter is not as strong as the one on the AF100, so there is more sharpness/ resolution to be gained on the gh2 by increasing the recording quality. If the AF100 effectively has a 'blur' filter over the sensor, then there's only so much resolution you can get out of it, right?
Of course that's not the only consideration.
A higher quality compression and/or color resolution would have less artifacts/ macro-blocking...etc and be much better for grading and color correction. But as some said, an external recorder could do this AND speed up and simplify your workflow, which would seem much more desirable to me.

How much would I pay? Nothing. I don't own an af100. :)
I have donated to the GH2 fund though and will again as long as it keeps getting better and better.

I think sometimes with a hack the wishlist gets too big. Everyone fronting any kind of money expects some kind of result, focus assist, more mbps, 10-bit instead of 8-bit or even program the SDI out into a cappuccino maker.. It could be possible, might not be too. When they're money involved, it's easy to turn into a mob when it goes into a failed venture.
So for the sake of Vitaly or Driftwood, we shouldn't ask too much. I'm sure it's a ton of pressure on them

That is, unless, we're all donating for the sake of science and exploration, curiosity, and the final frontier, then I'm game to donate.

Though I demand my AF100 to go to Warp 10. And I decree that the AF100 be called 'The Enterprise' once it's hacked.

No harder than it was setting up the GH2 page or setting up kickstarter page, I imagine.

Please clarify for those of us who aren't as enlightened. Who is Kenny G? Why does this Kenny G's word seem to carry weight that'll break a lesser man's jaw?
Stay thirsty, my friends.

Pot now over $6,300.

Is anyone a member of Vitaliys site ..?

http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussions

Doesn't seem he likes Pana flat out ..

http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/81/g3-announced.-all-the-same-****.

Will someone join up and ask him? I'm too frightened.

Cheers.

I'm a member. I'll log in and ask him. I think he has a gmail account as well. I've written him actually and never got a response.
But I'll link him to this thread rather than hope that he hears about this by atmospheric osmosis, lol.

I'd give $200 to include one to one pixel viewing...still makes me angry this was not included in the camera, who's idea was that?

I agree for 1:1 pixel mapping but, sincerely, I don't feel any need to hack my AF100. I'm working with Hyperdeck's uncompressed files in these days and it is hard to find a difference between AVCHD and uncompressed files. Only if you make an important grading you can see the difference. I prefer to record AVCHD files and uncompressed files at the same time: I have 2 copies and more chances in post production.

Regards

Gary
