GH3 Final verdict on moire and sharpness setting?

I'm still on the fence regarding the GH3 because of the moire I've seen online. Have any of you GH3 owners done a moire test with different sharpness settings?

It would be great to see how much the negative sharpness settings diminish the moire, if at all. Thanks.

Stop worrying, GH3 is an amazing camera. Much better than any Hacked GH2. No need to worry at all regarding moire, I shot on Canon dslr for years and managed, GH3 you are more than fine. I shot two entire projects and never once ran into moire or aliasing......

I'm running the GH3 + Voigtlander 25mm and using Natural Picture profile setings of -4, -4, -1, -5 and noticed some moire in certain clothing patterns. It doesn't bother me.

I shot my first small job with the GH3 last Wednesday, and had moire from the presenter's shirt. Fortunately the job is a mock-up of a training module, so the quality of the image isn't too important at this point in time. ( the full shoot will be a different story )

I am certain that if I had shot with my GH2 I wouldn't have seen the moire, but the GH3 made everything else so much easier. ( better color, better grain, lower noise, in-camera audio recording, etc... )

I shot using the Natural profile with everything turned down to -5.

After editing the footage, I am going to keep using Nature with everything at -5 except for saturation, which I will set to 0. ( image looked great, but saturation was a little on the faint side )

I was very happy with the GH3 shoot, except for the moire on the presenter's shirt. ( never want to see that again )

From this point on, for GH3 shoots I am going to test any clothing with fine patterns and use my 22 inch LED 1080 HD Samsung 5003 TV ( $250 full resolution focusing/composing monitor ), or switch back to my GH2 if I can't test clothing with fine patterns.

I got my GH3 on Tuesday, and had aliasing on the very first shot I took. It was of my bookshelf and the edges of the books twittered. Sharpness was at -5. However, it was shot with my Lumix 20mm f1.7. I've noticed that vintage lenses are less sharp, less electronic in their look and aliasing doesn't happen nearly as much with them. It's just an unfortunate trade-off for all the other advantages of the GH3.
BTW, I'm finding -5 contrast to look little TOO flat for my tastes, and I'm setting my contrast (on Natural) to -3.
My current setting s are:
Natural -3,-4, -1, -5

Its what will keep me from changing ,in my thread http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?300108-Why-do-these-cameras-record-poor-natural-greens the film shows my GH2 has more interlacing moire & ailsing than the Canon,if the GH3 is no better ? no point.

Edit https://vimeo.com/57369071 my hand held is not very good but it shows poor M & A and why for acceptable results its got to be a tripod for me and my GH2,would the the GH3 be better if i was using one there,i know the render has caused some judder but the M & A is the same as on the raw files.

Wow, was that shot with the GH2? I have NEVER encountered moire and aliasing that bad on anything I have ever shot with the GH2. And with the GH3, though I've only had it for a week, I have yet to see anything that looks that bad (in terms of moire and aliasing, otherwise your footage looks fine). If that video is indeed a GH2, what lens were you using? What was your sharpness set to? That just doesn't look right at all for a GH2.

Let me ask, is this shot in 50i and then placed into a 25p timeline? Or was the footage shot in 1080 and then placed into a 720 timeline in editing? I think the problem has to do with your editing program. It's either an improper scaling algorithm or with some kind of de-interlacing. I don't think the problem is the camera.

It is a quality camera - one you could do anything with, no fear. *It is not much better than a hacked GH2. But it is no slouch.

the film shows my GH2 has more interlacing moire & aliasing than the Canon

I've never experienced this myself. It's always been the other way around, where the Canon footage had much more aliasing and moire, while the patched GH2 footage was close to pristine. This is why I dumped all my Canon gear after owning my GH2 for a couple of months. ( I would go back to Canon if I owned a C100 camera, but never for any of their DSLR cameras )

I'm using Natural w/ everything -5 except for Saturation which is at 0. Very little Moire (only noticeable on far off rooftops w/ fine patterns) but I'm using SLR Magic 12mm 1.6 & SLR Magic 35mm 1.4 lenses. What codec are you guys preferring - IBP vs. All-Intra? I'm not noticing that much of a quality difference between the 2 but would like to hear others thoughts. Thanks!

IBP CODEC.

The All-Intra seems to be bandwidth starved, which you will notice when shooting anything with lots of detail and motion.

I am hoping that a future hack will allow us to double or triple the All-Intra bit-rate, which will change the game again.

Using IBP with outstanding result. Unfortunately, ALL-I results in MASSIVE moire with high detail frames.

Thanks TheDingo & Dan.Carter. I've noticed a little less moire in IBP as well, you guys along w/ more recording time on card space sold me.

First my GH2 has the the same M & A in all frame rates and shows the same played direct from the card or cam into a tv via hdmi, the lens was the 14-140 setting 0,the 14-140 does have good IMO, on some of my 6 lenses M & A can be worse, the film was on HBR 25P,24p is the worst of all.

...You do know that HBR 25p video is stored in an interlaced 50i video stream, and that you have to remove the interlacing before using the footage.

Same goes for the HBR 24p video stored in an interlaced 60i video stream. If you don't remove the interlacing the footage will look like crap.

I'll put money down that this is the issue. And also, the Sharpness should be set to -2, especially on Lumix lenses.

how do i remove the interlacing,i only use basic software, pinnacle coral, the same M & A shows on 50i and 720P,interesting if Dan removed the interacing on his pevious GH2 films that looked fine plus he keeps the sharpness well up on his cameras,i feal my camera is not right somewhere.
