Final pick preamp/recorder

Hi guys,
After two shoots with the rode VMP on my GH2 I came to understand the need for better audio :) Spend the last 4 days reading up here & on personal view

What I would like:
- A significant boost in pre-amp quality.
- Good mounting options with rig&GH2. I don't do any narrative work but it is imporant for me to be able to work comfortably as a one man band (small documentary etc)

The options I came to now:
- Juiced Link RA333 and into GH2 (maybe with cheap recorder later).

- Tascam DR-60D. I am not sure about preamps in comparison with Roland or Marrantz for example

- Roland R26 or Marrantz.

And at wich I switched the past few hours: Fostex DC-302. Bit pricey over here (800 euro) but ordering at B&H might save me some money.
And I've read a lot of good stuff about it here on PV.

So my question(s) would be:
- Wich solution would give me the cleanest audio?
- Doubting about pulling the trigger on the Fostex beacuse of it's size. Saw some mounting pictures with GH2, but not a lot. Will it be comfortable working as a one man band?

The last point is why I ruled out the (here highly regarded) tascam DR680, I feel it's too big to mount on a rig.
Am I getting in the right direction here?

got a 60D for 250 during the holidays. now its back to 350. this would have been a good buy for you
fostex was 500 now 600. this would have been also a good buy for you

My vote would go towards the Juiced Link RA333 Riggy with a good microphone that is placed to properly capture your subject. ( hypercardioid and/or lav mic for indoor work, shotgun mic for outdoor work )

As for mic; I have this job coming up. Shooting a documentary of a mental health clinic-team that tries to reach people with mental dissabillities/psyiatric problems combined with addiction. For example I would be riding along with a psychiatrist visiting "patients" in their house (or under the bridge/street/where-ever) and trying to get them food, medicine, care, a house, improve their lives.
Sometimes I'll have an interviewer with me, sound guy is out of the budget

So I would need a good indoors-mic with ok outside performance. Functioning as on-cam mic mostly (I know, I know....but given the situation I still need the best on-camera mic option)

MXL FR-310 170
AUDIO TECHNICA AT 875R 188
SENNHEISER MKE600 311
AUDIO TECHNICA AT 4053B 545

Really thinking about the AT4053B here. Also good mic to have on camera say at a wedding?

I've set my audio-budget on 1500. (could be stretched, but just want to invest wisely. 9 months in business now)

- Juiced Link 370
- Sennheiser Wirelesse G3 600
- AT4053B 545

Happy camper?

I own these three mics...

AT875R : Compact, great off-axis rejection, lower-end is weak so you need to boost this in post.

Sennheiser MKE600 : Good low-cost mic for both indoors and outdoors, sometimes sounds slightly muddy, but this can be fixed by a small boost in the upper-range. ( run from 48v phantom if you can for stronger signal )

AT4053B : Fantastic indoor mic if your subjects are close ( best if used on a boom ), sounds good outdoors if used close-in.

If your mic is mostly going to be used on camera, then I would go with the MKE600 with a good shock-mount ( like the Rycote universal kit ), and use the lav as your back-up audio track. The AT4053B would be the best for indoor work, but needs to be boomed in close. ( on camera it's probably going to be too far away )

cool, thx.
Could you explain further why you didn't advise the fostex? read a lot of excited people about it
Or do you think it's also a bit to bulky on a rig?

and stupid question but can't find an inmediate answer:
If I have two lav's on my juiced link. Can the signal outputted be divided in these 2 mics, Left for one lav and Right for the other?

SIGNAL ROUTING TO OUTPUT: Since this setup only uses one mic, set MONO/STEREO to MONO. This will mix all of the mic inputs together, and route them all to both the right and left outputs. If you wish to have channel separation when you are using more than one mic, then set to STEREO, and L1 and L2 will be routed to the left output channel, and R will be routed to the right.

Mainly the cost. It does look like a good unit, and it adds a proper recorder which would be a lot better than recording in-camera sound. ( B&H has it on sale for $600 right now )
Also the controls look much simpler than the Tascam DR-60D, which will likely translate to fewer f*ckups when you are working quickly.

Yes, you can record these as separate channels. Just be careful about using more than 2 mics on a 2 channel recorder, because if one mic screws up it will destroy anything it's being mixed with.
