Final Cut Users - Quick Question

I need to get some files to a Final Cut Ver.7 user. I told them they will need to use Log and Transfer to ProRes. I would rather hang on to my cards and a drive is not possible right now. I had planned to give it to them on DVD's.

Will it work to trim the size by keeping the file structure intact but delete certain mts files and deleting the corresponding CLIPINF files?

no... you need to delete it on a camera or with certain avchd viewers

If you start deleting files, you will break the structure. Best bet is to put it on a hard drive (exactly like on the card) and they can open them all up the same.
 
That's what I figured. Thanks for your response, I went to the Cow and found a thread saying the same thing.
 
can anyone confirm that you can't manually delete .mts and the corresponding .cpi files?
i'll test this myself, as i've done this a couple of times now.

another method of delivering to mac users is to copy the folder structure and as many .mts clips as you can to the first dvd.
then copy the remaining .mts clips to other dvds, without any folders.

then give precise instructions to the mac user that they are to copy the first dvd to their harddrive and then copy the contents of the remaining dvds into the STREAM folder.....then they can log and transfer from the reconstructed folder on their harddrive.

there's no way i'm buying extra harddrives and waiting around for shipping times back and forth.

on the other hand, a few sd cards wouldn't cost too much and could be mailed more cheaply than drives, but i would want those back unless the client was willing to buy them.

most clients want a 'hard' copy to keep for themselves, which is why i've resorted to the popular dvd format for delivery.

delivering hmc150 avchd footage to mac users has been such a pain.....i have yet to have a mac user that can successfully ingest the raw avchd. and yes, i've sent all the links and instructions for how to get FCP to handle avchd and none have succeeded at it!!
 
I just sent my client the cards. They said they will send them back. I would add the cards to the job, but I'm gun-shy of constantly buying new cards, only to get a bad one from Taiwan or somewhere. averan, if you do the test I'd be curious to find out how it works.
 
just tested transcoding using the MainConcept DVCproHD tool on a PC with a manually cleaned up AVCHD folder and had no problems at all.

assume that if this tool can do it, FCP can too. there's nothing in any secret files in the folders that would prohibit this from working. it doesn't matter to the NLEs if there's only one video file in there and it's numbered 0079 instead of 0001, as long as the associated .cpi file is there as well and that there are no unmatched extra files.
 
I tried it also with the MainConcept Tool. worked fine. I had just read that Final Cut was pretty picky and any alteration would cause problems.
 
I cant even get FCP to read a card that was not even altered... shot 6 cards, 1 doesn't read by FCP... all the crap is there when you browse!
 
i used to think mac users had it good for editing hmc150 footage, now, after hearing about so many fcp editors having so many problems, i'm very happy i'm a pc!
 
Toast can span the disc for you. The only drawback the person who is going to open the files needs to have toast as well.
I just use 8gig cards now to easily burn them on a dual layer but my initial cards were 16gigs and I used Toast.

i think Toast is a mac-only app.
i don't have a dual-layer dvd burner and don't know any clients that have a dual-layer dvd player that can read it.
