Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3 released!

The only thing missing for me right now is the management of the media. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to organize my stuff. I just made a new folder in an event and tried to move the media to the folder...no go.

Still testing the waters, but Premiere is still the better choice for me. However, I love the speed of FCPX on my Mac, with its GPU (OpenCL) support and a few other things, it's way faster for me in terms of realtime playback.

Try assigning keywords to your media.
It will streamline things quite a bit. Then you can create smart collections to further refine your management.

Folders are an old NLE way of looking at things. WIth FCPX it's all about META DATA for managing your assets. And it's very powerful.
YOu can assign keywords to clips, or even portions of clips. If you assign keywords to portions of clips, the in/out point of that clip is saved as it's own media reference for that keyword. So in essences it's a subclip now.
There's even more ways that keywords as collectiosn and smart collectiosn can help you manage your media, as well as speed up your workflow immensely.

Look into how to use keywords and how they apply to your media in FCPX. You will be amazed, how powerful it can be.

That it is, but sometimes you don't need that power and you just want a simpler option to get the project done quickly and keep everything organized. FCPX doesn't give you that option.

Gary,

While I'm certainly not an apple fan boy (I've hated apple's policies for the better part of 10 years), your statement is simply not true. You can do a quick digitize/capture or "archive" if coming from tape, and start cutting immediately without keywording or organizing your footage. I don't understand your statement.

IE: You can capture, identify your clip, , create folders (bins) and start cutting. No keywording or anything else necessary.

Best regards (and respect),

Dillon

It's been a while since I last played with it, but I recall it just dumping everything into the "bin" window and making it hard to sort through. So, for example, I had a bunch of video clips and two pieces of audio and it's just thrown together making it a chore to scroll through, instead of just making a quick bin (in Premiere) called "Video" and then "Audio" and dumping each into its own (quickly) and then collapsing each so that you don't have to scroll through everything.

Well you can do something like that already.
If your media is already arranged in folders on your drive, mine for example is audio, video, pics etc., you can import the folders and a keyword is instantly assigned to it. So you already have the folder setup if you need. And if you want to see your audio and video media separately, just change the view setting to show media type. This will let you see all of your audio and video separately.

Personally speaking I let FCPX assign some meta info during import, then refine it a bit, but assigning additional keywords to media. Depending on the edit, I might even take it a step further and go through clips and select portions of them that I might want to use (select in/out points) and assign keywords to them and favorite it as well. This way for example if I only want to see media that I made favorites, then only those show up in the media bin.

Of course I also have my keyword collections which helps me track my content.

I prefer the keyword meta way of media management over bin type management, because I find that I'm not constantly looking through media bins for content that I want to use.
Instead, while it takes a little time to do some keywording, it definitely speeds up my edit once i get into it. As it makes finding the media that I want to use quickly. I think of meta tagging content kind of like having yor=ur own DP for the edit.

Media management does need help though... Have you ever wanted to transfer multiple projects from one hard disk to another? One at a time. And if you are transferring render files/event files with it takes forever. If you could duplicate/move folders of projects, that would work just fine. But no go :/

I can finally stop using 7 for multicam projects. It was painful how slow 7 was compared to X.

I just wish Apple would make an "Advanced" color corrector that replaced the existing color interface with curves (but retained the ability to key color or create masks). Final Cut Studio would pretty much be dead to me at that point.

You can move projects (with attached media) by the project manager in the FCP interface. Of course it will take a while, video files can be quite large. :P

One of the few things I'm not a fan of at this point is that I can't export a work area of a project... any work arounds for this? Hope this feature is added.

Select the timeline, make a compound clip, then edit the in/out points and export?

Just to say if anybody is wondering about buying the "Magic Bullet looks 2" plug in ... get it... great price and easy to use, well worth the money at the moment with the 50% off.
