New to P2 workflow and have a few questions.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the P2 workflow and to this user group. I have 2 HPX 170's, a P2 Gear, 4 32GB cards, 2 16GB cards. I'm editing on an Intel Mac, FCP 6 and have a few questions.

1. While at a P2 workflow seminar I thought the lecturer explained that you could offload the cards in the field with a Macbook Pro and two drives at the same time, then one drive can be use as a edit drive and the other becomes a backup. How do I setup this process?

2. When using the workflow described in this forum on "Proper P2 Offloading Procedure for a Mac", posted by Barry, I noticed that the "lastclip.txt" file does not copy to the hard drive, I haven't had any problems editing, but could this cause me problems down the road, or am I doing something wrong?

3. I have so far uploaded Metadata before I shoot, then use the P2CMS software to offload the cards and log and transfer to import shots into FCP. When I do this I see the Metadata in the P2CMS software, but when I import thru log and transfer the metadata does not show up. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a better way to maintain the metadata?

4. How do I change the volume names of each of my cards so that when they mount on the Mac the cards have a unique name instead of each having "No Name"?

5. When recording long form, I upload metadata before the shoot. When I have to hot swap a card. Do all cards have to be preloaded with the same metadata or does the metadata carry over from the previous card and if I do preload all the cards does the auto numbering of the clips just pick up where the previous card left off?

I apologize for writing a novel here, but it seem that no matter how much prep you do to change formats, once you actually get your hands on the equipment it always brings up more questions than answers.

Thanks in advance for your response.

1. This would be done with Imagine Products Shotput software:
http://www.imagineproducts.com/ShotPut.html

2. That is because you are using the P2CMS program which uses the file to create/convert the clips for you but doesn't "copy" the clips and data over. There is a lot of other data on the files/folders that won't show either. You only need the lastclip.txt if your copying over straight from a card or disk and NOT using the P2CMS program. Barry's note states that it keeps you from making the mistake of not copying it over, which many people do when they are just copying the clips from one media to another. FCP needs the lastclip.txt to transfer correctly (from media, not from already converted clips)

3. I'm not sure about this one. I think you loose the data doing it that way but try doing a log and transfer from a folder, rather than "preprocessed" P2CMS clips and see if the data is there.

4. Barry Green covers this well here:

5. I Don't know this one. I haven't started messing with metadata yet. Although I know I should.

I think that you should be able to find all of your answers with some good google searches and forum searches.
