Final Cut Pro help

I am working with another company that runs FCP for editing. I edit in Vegas so my FCP knowledge is 0. Unfortunately it is a 2 camera shoot of one GL2 and my HMC40...the unfortunate part is using the gl2 and tapes. Apparently they had some issues with matching the formats to edit out the final product. Any suggestions???? Is there anyway to convert the HMC40 files to DV on a mac?

Use ClipWrap to transcode the mts files (HMC40 Footage). It's $50 but worth every penny especially since FCP cannot convert AVCHD into DV or DVCProHD.

OR.....

Transcode the HMC40 footage with Log and Transfer inside Final Cut Pro and use it in your DV timeline. Either way will work.

PM me if you need more detailed instructions.

So is Clipwrap able to transcode from the .mts format to a DV format and then directly onto FCP timeline and interact with other video from a GL2 that is brought in via firewire?

There a demo that you can use to test the workflow.

Yes I know there is the trial version...just hoping to confirm with Little bobby that it does do what is needed. Just an inquiry, I will let them know that it should work.

I work in FCP and often mix AVCHD sources (HMC150 and HCM40, once with Canon 7D) and tape sources. With FCP, I find it best and easiest to transcode AVCHD to ProRes using their Log and Transfer tool. From there, I simply create a new timeline set to match the ProRes settings and then bring in the tape sources in there. Of course you can do it the other way around and match your timeline to the tape source (SD) and cut the AVCHD sources in. However, I like to work in the highest quality I can and preserve the HD quality. However, if a majority of your shots will be in SD/Tape and you only plan to deliver an SD finish, then you should be fine ingoing with the SD timeline workflow.

Just like Ryan, I like working in the highest quality too...

...but when the need for DV arises, there's an option to do that. Basically what you do is open up ClipWrap and drag the card in from the desktop. I would recommend moving the contents of the card to a folder first then dragging that folder into ClipWrap, but either way works. At the bottom of the ClipWrap window you can select the Output format. In the pic, you can see I have DV selected. All the Apple ProRes codecs, AIC, DVCPro HD, and the option to re-wrap into a H.264 QT shell are available. Then just select the destination where you want your transcoded files to go and they go. It doesn't offer much in the way of Metadata editing or logging, and you can't change the output file name from the input file name (at least I don't think you can, but I haven't tried), but it will convert the AVCHD codec into other formats that Log and Transfer can't do.

Good luck, let me know if you need any more assistance.

I think Clipwrap might do the trick. My son has a Macbook from school that I might download the trial and install to give it a try. Sometimes it is locked up by the admin so I can't install things but maybe this will. The company I hand the footage off to is going to DL the trial and give it a go as well. This has been a thorn in my side before. Being here in Maine there are very few cameras like mine and even FCP users here get a little perplexed by the MTS files from it. I think I will try today and see how vegas does with DV and AVCHD on the same timeline. Thank you again.

I edit to DV/DVC pro every day using mts files from an HMC150. Just log/transfer- make sure your project is set up for DV output. The cool part is that you get all the resolution from the larger aspect files, and then can crop/reposition/zoom that high def footage inside the viewer window. You will have to do a lot of rendering as a result, though. So I'm with Ryanvalle- you really don't need anything else- except render time. If you are like me, you're probably already having to render because you color matching/grading anyway.
