Final Cut Pro Anamorphic Capture

Assuming you shot your film in 24f standard definition... When capturing using dv ntsc anamorphic, does it preserve your 24f frame rate, or does it automatically default to 30f? Anyone know?

24F in SD is exactly the same as the dvx or hvx SD DV 24p. The only way it will preserve the 24 frame rate is if you shot 24pA (same as the dvx) and capture it with advanced pulldown removal, at which point you can edit on a true 24p timeline--otherwise you have to remove pulldown from the 29.97 footage. (big PITA if you have lots of footage)

I can't stress it enough: If you want true 24p editing and the most flexibility it is practically a no-brainer to shoot 24F HDV. It is a pure 24 fps (23.976) stream (no pulldown or repeat frames) that can easily downconvert via software and give you better SD...provided that you DC to a better SD codec than DV.

If you have a fairly fast Mac/PC and the latest FCP, PPro, Vegas, Edius, etc. you shouldn't have any signifigant problems with HDV editing. What you DO gain is the simplicity of native 24p editing and--to some degree--a bit of future-proofing to your work.

Just about everyone I know that has an A1/G1/H1 hardly ever shoots SD. I can count on one hand the amount of hours of SD I've shot with Canon HD cameras...but most of the time I've delivered SD. The results have always been better than I could possibly achieve with plain-vanilla DV acquisition.
