Final Cut Pro 7 --> Wishlist

i want to be able to keyframe filters (correct me if this is currently possible)
being able to keyframe a blur or something like that would be nice

Yes, this is possible and is a very basic feature. Drag the filter onto a clip. Double click the clip to open it in the viewer, go to the filters tab. Find the filter you applied, find the property of the blur you want to animate, than use the button there to add keyframes and animate this effect on the clip.

"Close All Gaps" command. This could give a warning message first, and after performed, could say "xxxx gaps closed, xxxx gaps could not be closed" (depending on files in other tracks).

When I rough cut, I lay everything in V1. Then use ctrl+V to cut the good stuff out, and bring it up to v2. then I duplicate sequence, delete V1 and bring V2 back down, but then I have a ton of gaps... and I want to close them...

So, a "close all gaps" command would be great!

A "History" palette, similar to seen in Adobe products, where you can view every step taken, click on a specific one to go back, and/or then click forward in time to come back to the newer settings.

- Better keyframing controls - ability to drag over key frames, and copy/paste them to a different clip (not the whole filter, not even the whole parameter (but that option too!) but even down to just certain keyframes! When copying and pasting filters, different options for how the keyframes should paste (keep the same distance based on frames apart, or keep the same distance based on percentage of clip). The ability to click a button and reverse all the keyframes laid out.

- A note on my variable time speed I put in my first post; this is different than time remap. Time remap changes where all the frames are grouped in a clip; I mean a varaible time change that actually changes the duration of the clip when changing speeds. How this would work is, CMD+J to go to the speed window, and if you click "variable" a little window slides open to reveal more options. We see a thumbnail version of the video file, with a slider underneath of it where keyframes can be set. As you go through the video, set a keyframe on the certain frames you are looking at, and how fast the video should be going at that point. Once keyframes/speeds set, the video file actually changes duration and interpolates all the inbetween speeds. This creates a smooth ramping effect, but allows the duration to be changed - that way, even you can have a super fast into, and then a slight slow motion outro, rather than right now where the outro would have to be super slow to compensate for that fast intro if you were to have used time ramp.

- An auto-slideshow feature, like iPhoto almost - apply pan & scan's automatically, which you could later adjust with keyframes. Auto transitions, set length, etc. Fully featured.

- I second a GUI overall... the other apps (DVDSP4, Comp3, STP2) now have a much nicer/newer appearance.

My main gripes are workflow related.

1. Background rendering where you can specify that x cores works on rendering, while the rest are left for editing
2. Cluster/distributed rendering with free/cheap render-node licences and some kind of front end. And qMaster is not there. That way you could throw any (old or new) (Intel) mac @ a project over the network. In addition to have a manual setup, one should also have a "use all available cycles on the network in chumps of x MB" routine and write the resulting file to directory y on disk z

As to FCP using all cores, it depends a bit on your disk/memory setup. For most playback in standard video-formats, you don't really need all that processing power, and when it chokes, it's more often due to memory/disk bandwith than the computer. When I added 8GB RAM and a 5 disk RAID-5 setup, my 8-core goes to around 8x90% on renders.

I want a single keystroke for "Export->Using Quicktime Conversion->Still Image"

That's a good one.

I guess it's never too early to make a wishlist. You would have to figure that an FCP 7 is probably well over a year away (my guess is June 1, 2010....lol). Apple pulled out of this year's NAB because they didn't have anything new (well, one reason anyway). Last year everyone was freaking out because of the new FC Studio & COLOR. This year they (Apple) aren't even gonna be there. A lot of speculation points to them selling off the Final Cut franchise (although I don't particularly believe that). Again, wishlists are a good thing, but maybe a FCP 6.2.0 wishlist instead of for FCP 7.

No, it's an FCP 7 wishlist. The POINT is to get it early - if you don't, it's useless.

This will be written up and sent to Apple, and it needs to get to them BEFORE they feature lock (meaning, no more new features added, only working on the current list to be added).

If any changes will get made for FCP 7, often it may need to be requested a good year in advance... otherwise forget it.

I agree. FCP really needs some cluster support. That would have really speeded things up for me.

I dunno - whenever processing third-party filters (especially the included Boris Title3D) FCP seems to use only one core.... no significant disc usage, no resource bottleneck that I can think of. I can have a render chugging along at high speed through transitions, CC, multi-streams... then it hits a Title3D clip and drops to 3 or 4 frames per second. Not even complex Title3D stuff... no animation, no 3D! Just simple text. Around 100% CPU (or 75% idle)...

Pardon me. I digress.

I'd like to see FCP & COLOR play nicer together.

Project creation should create it in a project folder automatically.

Do you mean, under FCP documents, there should be one for "projects" where the .FCP file automatically gets placed? This would be nice. Currently I make a folder for my projects, since FCP doesn't... it organizes everything else like capture scratch, etc. - why not project files too.

Is that what you're referring to?

Ability to "click and drag" to enable/disable or lock/unlock tracks, or check/uncheck filters (like Adobe).

Ability to group clips in the timeline into groups, and ungroup clips, like many other NLEs. With the additional ability to name groups and search/sort groups of clips, with a "smart folder" as mentioned before.

Ability to drag only one side of a split cross fade out (IE, when a cross fade is placed between two adjacent clips, currently, to make it longer or shorter, equally affects both sides. You should be able to drag it longer on one side without affecting the other, for example, a short fade out of one clip and a long fade into the other... Currently, you can only set the fade EQUAL between two clips, or ALL one one clip or ALL on the other.... this should be changed.

- copy/paste individual keyframes
- reverse keyframe order
- ability to open multiple canvas windows and select the source track from the timeline it is viewing, as an alternative to using the multi-clip function

ability to dock all the windows together and resize them in relation to eachother (like in Premiere) - drag the canvas bigger, other windows get smaller proportionally, drag timeline bigger, other windows get smaller. Helps for adjusting realestate on single monitor setups. Should be a menu item that can be checked on or off (docking together).
