Don't know if everyone has seen this yet, but Apple just announced Final Cut Studio 3 with FCP7, including expanded ProRes options and native AVC-Intra editing. Even better, the new Color 1.5 also grades AVC-Intra natively. The new Log and Transfer window has a feature to automatically ingest footage as soon as you mount a P2 card, which might be nifty.

Doesn't seem like an earth-shattering upgrade otherwise, but native AVC-I sure is appealing; those ProRes files eat up disk space quick. Plus, they lowered the price to $999/$299 upgrade.

Yet again, DVD Studio Pro was ignored in this update... the current version has been out for going on 3 years now, I think. It seems like Apple still doesn't know what to do with Blu-Ray, so they just keep ignoring it.

However, the new version of Compressor can now output directly to a DVD or Blu-Ray, meaning you will be able to make really simple Blu-Rays with FCS3. It looks like there's just a couple of stock menu templates you can put in, nothing approaching DVDSP. So, it's kinda there, but nothing usable for real authoring, just making HD rushes and simple HD footage discs.

You still need to unwrap the mxf video and audio files and rewrap in QT. That is native DVCProHD support, but not native mxf support.

Compressor can now encode blu ray and author a simple blu ray disc. So can the share function out of FCP7. Nothing in DVD SP though

I'm ok with this actually .. if you get DVD Architect from Sony, you've got
a pretty decent back-end .. with an excellent front-end from FCP.

I wish Apple would fill the blanks with blu ray .. but this is a good
first step.

Bit confused! So does FCP now do AVC-I flavour P2 (and the other legacy HPX available res's) just like Avid, without re-wrapping? Can you now edit straight 'off the card'?

No. Apple specifically prevents that and will never allow it.

You can, however, circumvent them by using a third-party application such as Calibrated MXF Importer, which will allow you to do what you describe.
