Final Cut 5.1 update needed for A1???

Sooooo bummed out right now. I can't edit my 24F footage because I didn't get the $50 update when it was available. It's a little bit lame actually. I've paid for every legit upgrade to FCP since version 4 other than the $50 5.0.4 to 5.1.0 "intel mac" upgrade. I don't own any intel macs and didn't own an HDV camera at the time either.

To make it worse it appears now that Studio 2 has been announced there is nothing relating to the 5.1 update out there.

Anybody have any suggestions for me? Sure would be nice to be able to capture/edit my footage.

Hopefully I don't have to wait until they decide to finally ship FCS2 (which I've already preordered)... I may go insane by then.

(Please send a PM if you have any ideas)

jleo, thanks for the workflow which I'm sure "works" but there has to be a better way. I'd rather spend $50 and have it work natively with FCP than $80 on software I don't know and jump through a bunch of hoops.

It is sooooo worth the $50, don't even hesitate.

Ohh Elton I know... problem is... scratch that, WAS that the crossgrade is no longer available.

So, being the cool headed guy I am (that's sarcasm for those of you that don't me very well yet) I call Apple all pissed off.

To make a long story short.... I'm getting the upgrade for free. It will still take however long for them to process and ship the disc but it will at least get here before FCS2 and allow me to continue testing.

FWIW, I'm already in love with the A1 and 60i. I could really care less about 24f at this point with what I'm getting in 60i but it will be nice to see the comparison.

For every answer I "FIND" I also find 10 more questions. It's fun and exciting learning all this new stuff but I'm already looking forward to actually getting back to work and making some money with the thing.

HDVXDV works as a free trial. At least, you can capture something while you wait for the upgrade! Also Toast Titanium 8 captures from the A1 in DV mode, not sure if it works in HDV mode.

Todd, I am impressed that you talked Apple into giving you the update for free. You must be very persuasive!

LOL... yes, and it wasn't even that hard. But then again, when you have full copes of FCS1 and paid for another FULL license for FCS 2 AND and upgrade for FCS1 to FCS2, multiple workstations and laptops and you can't edit your footage you get a little leverage.

OK, so a few questions.

First: Have we concluded that 24f is fully incompatible with 5.0.4? If so, crapmonkeys.

Next: What exactly did you say to get the free upgrade? I am in the same boat as you, and have purchased every legitimate upgrade since 4, have no intel macs, nor HDV cam at the time that the upgrade was offered, and thus no need whatsoever. We should not be punished for choosing not to purchase a product which would be completely unecessary for our work. My A1's coming this week, and I can't use my as-up-to-date-as-possible-on-a-PPC-$699 (Academic) FCS to edit the footage I shoot. Getting it free is one thing, but I see no reason that Apple shouldn't at least allow me to buy the $50 crossgrade now. This is just silly.

I'm calling tomorrow to get myself one of those discs.

Finally, is it true that purchasing the crossgrade transforms your Academic FCS into a commercial one? I heard that on another forum somewhere, would be kind of nice...

First: 24F is incompatible with 5.0.4 - not fully though as there are "work arounds" None that I've bothered to take the time with however.

Next: I played it as a "woe is me" but a bit pissed at the same time. Turns out that the discs cost $16 each. If all you want to do is capture and edit for now, all you really need is the first disc. The trick is getting them to send it out without having to send your old one in. They will ask for the customer service number on the install guide. I have no idea about the academic thing, that might put you out of luck. Call them though. I explained that I had ordered FCS2 and another license upgrade to FCS2 and (it seems that he KNEW that) he gladly offered the discs at no charge without me even asking.

Finally: I highly doubt it. That would be a loss of about $500 for them and doesn't make much sense.

Ordered disc from Apple monday afternoon, received disc today (Wednesday) morning at 10am.

Awesome!

Todd- what department did you speak to? I just talked to the guys at Final Cut Support and they said it would cost me $68, as they could not send single discs (something about having a single serial number for FCS, and not for individual apps). How did you swing it for free... who'd you talk to?

The guy I spoke with denied me of talking to a manager... I didn't think that was allowed. He also said that he souldn't be doing this as "you can't upgrade academic softwares". True, one cannot upgrade full versions (3 to 4, FCS to FCS 2, etc), but point upgrades have always been free. When I told him this, he retorted with "Yeah, we'll I'm already making an exception, so..." I tried calling back to speak with someone else and he picked up again. D'oh.
