Filters quesiton

I was wondering what you guys use for Filters - the 4x4 filter or the Circular filter?

I have my camera set at 50, 5.6 and the ISO 1250. But shooting outdoors in the sun I need to bring something in a bit stronger or step down to ISO 100. Any feedback?

I have screw-in filters, but only because a mattebox seems too pricey for my needs. If you already have a good one, square filters are probably the way to go.

I've used the vari-nd 's but I don't like the shifts they do. I'm stuck on Schneider 4x4 ND, grad ND and love their Attenuators.

Don't forget, anything over 3 stops of ND is going to need IR cut or a hot mirror correction in order to avoid having blacks which are shifting in color to the infrared spectrum.
