Filter that actually DOES fix moire and anti-aliasing on the 5DmkII

From looking at the examples, it seems to increase the PERCEPTIVE resolution since the aliasing really messes with the ability to see the detail. This is a VERY exciting new addition to this camera and the guy who's making it is about to make a lot of dough. I could see him selling THOUSANDS of these very quickly LOL.

He will sale thousands the first day they are out if he can manufacture as many. I for one will buy today if it were possible. I will gladly use my 5d until a better codec and full frame arrises without blinking an eye. outside of the moire/aliasing this cam delivers the goods.

it's for 5dmkii only. they are developing a 7d version next

Since the 7D and T2i/T3i/60D share the same sensor, I'd bet that would work fine with those cameras even if it's just for 7D.

I'm going to make a prediction:

5D II + this filter > 5D III

for video

The increased resolution of the 5D III makes me worry about its video performance in regards with moire and aliasing. I think it might be even worse.

From the cinematographer who helped develop it:

"Thanks Kyle. When I originally introduced the 5D's problems to Dr. Cubanski in State College, PA... I never realized just how many people were frustrated with the aliasing & moiré problems that virtually all HDSLR's have. The new filter assembly realistically cures 75%+ of all the visual artifacts, now this unusual device has to be produced in a decent quantity. Thanks" - Glenn PrZyborski

Looks like it might be a little ways away from production/sales.

Wow.

This is great news, +1 on the 7D please! Being able to reduce moire on overcranked 720p footage will be fantastic!

Their examples look really good. I've always felt the 5d (we still have ours) looked better with a little internal sharpening, but we kept if down for the most past because of fear of moire.

More interested in the GH2 hack and epic at the moment, but good on these folks for finding a solution. They'd have sold SO many of these a couple of years ago!!!!!!!!!

I'd definitely pick one up for my 7D. I shoot with an FS100 now, but, I still shoot with my 7D in situations where I need a smaller camera for a variety of reasons. This would make it a better B camera. Hopefully their 7D version won't be too far behind.

Sounds like they're probably doing it right. They are basically making their own OLPF. It will have it's own set of drawbacks, which Philip already mentioned - lens focus marks now being slightly off, etc. And I would wonder whether all lenses will reach infinity. But really, they are approaching it the only way you can approach it. We had someone here try something sort of like this when the t2i was first introduced, by substituting in a different OLPF, but he didn't have one custom developed for this specific purpose. So if these guys have optimized it for the way the Canon sees res, the. Yeah, it should work. Still won't be perfect because of the line skipping situation, but they already acknowledge that by saying that it solves 75% of the problem.

Great idea and I hope they get it working fully and can mass produce them to make a fortune on it.

For his sake...I hope the same. For our sake, I hope CANON fixes the problem!!

Hmm.. after adding sharpness in post to their res chart video looks quite good i must say.
There is some slight loss of sharpness tho but i dont think its so noticeable.

The "loss in resolution" is more than likely just the absence of the fake resolution that aliasing renders. Pretty sure Canon DSLR's have always only resolved around 720p worth of true resolution.

They resolve about 550 lines, like an HVX200 like image. The AF100 is still far sharper around 700 if i rember correctly. Remember, losing the aliasing will make your image looks soft and lose crispness.

Edge enhancing it back in will make it look video-ey.

This is a STRONGLY double edged sword.

I prefer the softer look of the canon. I think Some people prefer it at times, minus the aliasing and moir. As a matter of fact I turn sharpness all the way down in the cam and rarely add it back in when doing post. I figured if i want to get that super sharp look i would just use a dedicated camcorder like a sony ex1.

550 seems very low, but then again 700 lines also seems very low for an Af100 so perhaps your test was more rigorous in general? Or the one I've seen more forgiving? From what I understood, the GH2 and the AF100 resolve around 850-900ish lines and the Canons around 700.

I'm not a fan of increasing USM either, but sometimes a tiny bit helps while still looking natural.

Any idea when this product might be released Philip? ..or anyone else. I can't seem to find a projected release date.

Cinestyle picture setting from Technicolor, now this product. The 5DII is developing into a nice little cine camera.

On a side note. I'm sure this product will cause yet another bulging vein in the forehead of Jim Jannard.
