Filming tips, techniques, advice?

I just got the go ahead for my first documentary project on a sporting event. The doc will be part sports action, part interviews, part non-sports action. Any tips, techniques, or advice would be great. I have a DVX100, lapel mics, shotgun mic, and polarized and UV filters. I would like some settings for action shots vs. interview shots (60i vs. 24p vs. 24p(adv) and maybe a setting or filter for that grainy look (if that makes sense). Thanks everyone for your help.

Search around the threads. There are lots of discussions already posted about many of the setting options.

As far as 60i vs 24p vs. 24pA... that has nothing to do with action shots vs. interview shots. Pick the frame rate that you feel best fits your story, and stick with it. You'll find a huge headache waiting to happen if you shoot all three and try to use them all in the same project. Also of note, do not shoot squeeze mode if you're using 60i. It'll look like crap. If you want a look closer to 60i, but feel that you need 16:9, use 30P and squeeze.

As for the grainy look, you may be better off adding grain in post if that's what you really want.

Thanks, which do you prefer 24p or 24pa, I read 24pa is best if you plan on taking it to the big screen? I heard 60i was better for action shots that is why I asked. Thanks again.

The choice between 24p and 24pA is really about post workflow. While both can have the pull-down removed for editing at 24p (23.976), 24pA is a cleaner conversion since it's just a matter of removing a few frames/fields. With 24p, the pull-down removal actually requires recompressing some frames. Read this. If you're using FCP, 24pA is the way to go. Adobe Premiere Pro can automatically remove pull-down from either. Though, editing 24p footage in FCP at 23.976 can be done; it requires use of Cinema Tools to reverse-telecine.

If you're shooting 24p for editing in a 60i project, then 24p is the way to go.

60i is fine, but if you want to do anything with the Internet, you'll have to deinterlace. You can use 60i to conform slow-mo for 30p and 24p as well. But again, you don't want to shoot several different frame rates and then have to mix them in post.
