GH2 Filming nightlife

So I was asked to go film at a club. I'm using the GH2. Suggestions on setup? Modes? Anything from anyone who has done it is helpful

Any chance you can get a ccd cam to back you up? Sometimes if theres flashes, you get that weird half frame thing.

It is possible to salvage those shots pretty easily in After Effects. What you do is just placing a mask below where it isn't overexposed and then just add A LOT of brightness until they match.

something bright and wide would really help with the club footage as any club I've ever been to gets pretty tight. Especially for any 'walk through' shots of the people partying.

Do you have a camera-mountable LED light? I've always found those to be crucial when doing event videography at night. I'd couple that with your Voigtlander and you should be good to go.

The Voigtlander is perfect for nightclubs, it would do 90% of the time even without an LED, but I'd agree having some lighting covers all bases.

From the OP equipment list, it doesn't look like he has a wide 'fast' lens..., the 25mm is about 'normal', which at 10 ft. gives about a 4'x7' 'field of view', and in general has about 40 deg Horizontal Angle of View.

Whereas the 14mm lens gives a 7'x13' field of view at 10', and has a 60 deg Angle of view...

But the Panasonic 14-140 is a variable f-stop zoom, and has a range of the rather slow f/4-5.3.

Back in the olden days, the Wife bought a 17-35 f/2.8 Nikon lens for this 'very reason', to get into tight room situations, and come out with something worthwhile...

Even then f/2.8 may be still 'slow' for a dim club scene...

As for 'things'... if the logistics of the situation allow it, a small '3-step' stool/ladder would also be a good thing to have... to get above the crowd...

Absent that, a monopod and rase the pole above the crowd...

I've done a fair bit of this recently. Caveat, with a 5D2.

Faster the better on the glass. 2.8 will just squeak by if you go up into the 3200 ISO range. I did most of the shooting with a 50mm 1.4 and a 135mm 2.5

You have to shoot the most illuminated areas. The dance floor (with flashing lights), the areas around the bar, etc... Even if you can get an exposure in the darker areas (as in only 2 or 3 stops under or so) it will still look pretty crappy.

Wide shots look good with the pools of light in the club, but focus really is an issue. Even with a fairly wide lens you are going to be so shallow wide open that you have to pick an areas to be in focus, the rest will be soft. Focus in general is an issue because the light is just so low. I was doing manual, auto might be better, but might spend all it's time hunting.

I found myself using a fair bit of the long lens because what the hell you're going to have very shallow DOF either way, might as well use something where shallow DOF makes sense and looks good.

The 25 0.95 is fast, but is it wide enough? I think for that purpose, one may think about the 17.5mm 0.95 - the advantage being it's much wider.

The 17mm f/0.95 is a little hard to come by, and having just played with the 25mm yesterday, I find it plenty wide.

The 20mm 1.7 is plenty wide for almost everything I do. You can get a cool look out of the 14, but 20mm 1.7 is just a very very handy lens for me. If only it had better focusing control and faster auto focus...

What is the highest ISO you guys recommend shooting at? I'm use to shooting more action like events, so also should I be shooting with a lowers shutter speed like 60 or higher like 120? Thanks for the comments. I may look into a wider fast lens when I get some money. THe wide lens I have now is great for skating, but for this type of event I could see wanting a faster lens.

Don't bother shooting at anything over 1600 ISO and your shutter speed should probably be between 40-60, no higher.
