i just got hired to film a live benefit that consists of live bands. the venue will be inside with low lighting and with a multi color light set up as well. whats the best way to film this with my dvx 100a?

also whats the best way to capture the audio?

i have a boom mic a marantz field recorder & a senheiser wireless mic set.

Audio is tricky in these types of situations. My best experiences have been multiple mic's. I would try to plug into the mixer in the back, and feed that to your camera, then set up the recorder onstage, and get the crowd and band.

What kind of Sennheiser mic's are you using? Lav I assume?

As for camera settings, it can be difficult sometimes. For frame rate, that will depend on where the content is going. If it is for the web, then 30p. For DVD or other television viewing, then 60i or 24p. I would set the scene file settings to flat and change anything in post. Let me know how it goes..

(woo! thousandth post!!!)

I remember filming a few bands years ago with my DVX100b, i didnt have a mixer to get a feed, so i got two Shure SM58's and put them on stands facing the band.
The mic's were together but spaced roughly the distance of human ears and angled slightly outwards, being dynamic mics they easily coped with the volume of the bands.
I found they gave me a lovely sound :) I not 100% sure but i probably used Cine-D and 25p (i'm in PAL land) and a little gain, i found it gave a nice feel to the video.

cheers Andy

For audio capture of this kind of performance, a mono feed out of the house desk plus a dynamic mic either directly in front of the stage or suspended overhead to get backline & drums. A bit of stereo spread in post will improve it.

Alternatively, if you have access to an additional audio recorder (like the H4n), you can record a stereo mix from the desk plus a stereo stage sound. Of course you then have to sync the two in post, but he H4n is pretty reliable on that score - much better than its predecessor (which I have had to use on occasions and re-sync every 60secs!!).
