Film Look Takumar Lens Family Shoot

Hi filmmaker friends,
This forum is invaluable to helping each other out in making better films. I just wanted to say that lately I've been using more Takumar lenses for shoots and they are giving me the look I like. Some call it 'filmic' - and the combination of old lenses and color rendition out of the GH2 gives me great skin tones and just the right amount of softening to look like I pulled the footage from a reel! You've got to watch how far you go in color correction with the codec though - so for me, I try and setup the camera and lighting situations so that I get the best picture possible coming into the camera. This short was shot on both the GH2 and GH13. They cut together quite well. I used Takumar 135 2.5, Takumar 50 1.4, 1.8, and the Panny 20mm 1.7 on steadicam. I found I had to work in post to getting the Panny lens to look like the Tak's clips. Hope this helps those that are looking for a softer, filmier look. For the musicians out there, I composed the music using Logic.

Wathcing videos like that I always have to think about how precious they will be for those families 20 or 30 years from now, especially with such emotional music, which I like a lot btw!

nice shots. Correct me if I'm wrong but you seem to be using the Super Takumar versions as opposed to SMC? Super Taks do exhibit a more 'filmic' kind of look...

I have to say that I really love the look of this. I thought the panny 20mm footage looked somewhat out of place though, which I say through gritted teeth as I just bought that very lens today. I really liked the "reel" look. I'd like to think I can get this from my pancake but realise it will take some work in post! I'm also heading over to Vancouver and onto Vancouver Island to do the West Coast Trail and some rock climbing. Currently trying to figure out what lenses are essential and just how many batteries I will need!

Bring ALL your batteries ; ) Short battery life is where I get frustrated using the GH2. (My GH13 seems to go forever on just one.)

What adaptor do you use to connect the Tak lenses? Do you own other Tak lenses or just the 135 2.5, 50 1.4, 1.8? Thanks!

adapter is m42-M4/3. Found it on eBay for about $10. I have a couple of each lens you mention. Cheers.

Thank you for sharing. That is really really really well done. For a first time buyer on a budget, if you do not mind the intrusion, do you recommend the GH2 or the hacked GH1? It seems although the GH2 is out, there is a lot of film done on both the GH2 and GH13, and hence my question.

Thanks.
