File Size HMC150, DVCPROHD, ProRes

I work for the State of Missouri in a new department that is just now starting to get into video. I'm a new hire, and will be putting a rig together very soon, so I have a few questions yall may be able to help me with.

At my previous job, we shot everything with HVX200s and edited in FCS 2. The cameras were usually set to 720p60 and we would offload the cards to a Drobo for storage, as well as ingest into FCP from the Drobo over FW800.

With the new setup, I would like to shoot everything in 1080p24. I read the specs for the HPX170 and saw that it doesn't shoot 1080p24 Native. Drawback number one.

I'm debating wether or not to buy a HMC150 or a HPX170, and the transcode issue has come up as well. I know that when I used the HVX200s, I just brought everything in with Log & Transfer and began editing, but with the HMC150, there is a step involved where Log & Transfer transcodes everything to ProRes. What would be a good comparison between the size of a one minute DVCPROHD 720p60 and a AVCHD 720p60 file that has been transcoded to ProRes. Will it be bigger than the DVCPRO file, and if so, by about how much (I know AVCHD is variable bitrate, so it depends a little on the scene)? I like the idea of having small H.264 files put away on my storage array for safe keeping because it takes up so little space compared to the DVCPROHD stuff, but based on the editing system I'll be using, I don't have much to spare in terms of Capture Scratch. It'll handle a DVCPROHD workflow, but I just can't find a comparison of file sizes between 720p60 DVCPROHD and 720p60 AVCHD transcoded to ProRes...

Hopefully that doesn't sound all jumbled up and confusing.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

Andy

Get the 150, which shoots 24p Native. Use the money you save to upgrade to the Adobe CS5 suite, which handles the media as is, no transcoding.

(Plus you get a native 64 bit app, hardware acceleration, Dynamic Link between Premiere Pro, After Effects and Encore, built-in Blu-ray authoring, and more.)
