im shooting a feature film with my DVX100b at the end of this Month.
Ive ALWAYS used a custom file setting. but should I choose to shoot in a standard mode, to be sure not to mess up any color or anything?.. Ive got a location that we have got for 1 day so no reshoots, i just dont wanna mess anything up.

Well are you going to be colour correcting it? If so set the scene files so it is easier for you.

Yeah, I'd go as neutral as possible. Drop the detail a little to help keep edges and noise clean, but focus more on consistent white balance and proper exposure. Everything else can be done in post.

alright. so as far as anything goes... I usually just make films to play around and make short films, but this is our first actual film. I am curious to know is there a certain shutter speed i need to use? its going to be a dark film low lit areas..

Are you shooting in 24pA? 1/48 is the starting point. It depends on what kind of motion you want to capture. If there's just not enough light, you can sometimes get away with 1/24 depending on the movement.

But remember that most films that seem "low-light" are actually shot with tons of light and then stopped down and color graded to create the dark look.

yes ill be shooting in 24Pa. we are actually shooting in a very old abandoned hotel theres no light. we will be using electric generators with the work lights. i really should have bought barrys book, I would love to know everything about the dvx.

I've seen the pics you posted of the hotel. Looks like there's a lot of ambient light coming in. I'd shoot day for night in there. Harness the ambient and supplement with your worklights and some diffusion.

Very cool location, too.

yeah theres quite a bit but still abit dark in some places and corners but i understand what your saying. thank you very much very helpful

Depending on where in the hotel you're shooting, a couple of well-placed bounces could use the incoming ambient to bring up corners and darker spots, too.

gotcha i may just bring in some reflectors then.

Those will help quite a bit. Be aware that you will be mixing color temperatures, so you'll want to get some CTB for your worklights to match them to the incoming sunlight.

where do i go about getting CTB gels?. and how expensive?

Rolls or sheets. Depends on how much you need. Filmtools also has Roscolux, but the products are not on the website right now.

I'd also ask if you can get a Roscolux swatch book (it'll either be free or around $1). Very handy. I use mine for warm/cool balance... pull a swatch of CTO or CTB and put it in front of the lens when you white balance. They also have a Lee swatchbook.
