T2i Feedback on a Music Video

I made this music video for a local Pittsburgh music artist. I set up lighting to try to make it look like a spot light when he was in the corner of the room. I shot this video on a Canon T2i 50mm f/1.8 lens. Please give me some feedback on how to better myself with my video work. Thank You.

I liked the "look" but agree some different cut a ways would have killed the monotony of it. or at least a more interesting set.

Exactly.

It started out great with a creative intro, but all the shots look the same. It gets boring to look at after a while. Still, nice job! I'm sure you'll do even better next time.

If you were going to shoot in 1 location then you should do more coverage. That way you can cut to the beats. Also could have had him do things like that add movement and momentum. Even a silmple close up from the front would have helped. Also the shots of him looking down writing while rapping isn't very energy driven.

Also DOF only goes so far before it becomes annoying because the audience is waiting for the subject to finally get in focus.

Overall good try. We're all learning. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the great feed back. I will try harder next time. I actually shot this video http://vimeo.com/17385496 before the one I just posted take a look at this video by the same artist. Any feedback on this would be great as well.

Checked out your link. I like the song and the video overall. Constructive criticism I can tell you is
1. you did better with cutting more with different angles, you might want to add more though to make each angle have additude. For example different focal length. Shooting the subject slightly off center, closer, further, show close ups of hands moving, reaction shots from the other guys, quicker cuts.
2. there is rolling shutter in your vid which can work but if you use it right. Sometimes I like it and sometimes you notice it too much where it seems like just rolling shutter. But I like what you were trying to do.
3. I liked the wall you picked.
4. as said before if you add a few more locations it helps. Even something as simple as them walking down the street, or hanging out somewhere else, girls walking by, you can do tricks like girls passing in front of cam

Overall I like your stuff. Keep it coming! Doing rap music videos is awesome and fun!

I honestly like it, I mean it's not like the song is high energy either. If anything could be improved, I just say there should have been more of what's already there: the notepad shots are cool, more of them would have probably added the best touch. Love the black and white, it's a very black and white song. Love the light idea, simplistic and really breaks up the shot. Basically, again, I think more note pad and more of that reverse staccato type effect would have served well throughout the video - just something to place a bit of crazy emphasis on the artists singing to himself alone and under the influence of whatever he's drinking/smoking/feeling about. Like an example would be him writing the song's lyrics on the pad, some shots of him writing that and letting the viewer see, then having the whole pad reverse quickly like the intro did. Just taking what's there and amplify it. Just something to give a snap every now and then.

Also, although it's just a simple addition, that lights bokeh outside the window is an example of the shots that really gives this video umph and a bit of needed spectacle, so I'm very glad you got those shots. It's little things like that that can add just more tone and feel to the video, and really the way to look at it is there's no such thing as a bad idea, it matters more how well you can soup up an idea and make it look pretty yet never lame. You really got to pack the punch no matter what ya do, even if your goal is to do something simple - in this case, it seems like you wanted the artist to look as though it's late at night, he's trapped in his thoughts and creativity, and it seems like he's feeling lonely. So I'd say keeping him indoors was a good idea, and I think it's already a good idea that the video is nothing overblown or typical, it's just that it's a very good but plain idea that could probably even be umphed with simple post effects that you could go back and do on your computer for practice. Just stuff to try. I mean really, I thought it was a good video, and I think the #1 and almost only thing I kept wanting to see more of is more notepad. Those notepad scenes grabbed me and I was really hoping for more!

This was the feedback I was looking for, thanks for the long write up & time. I probably should of got more b-roll shots like you said; notepad, drinks, smoking, etc... Although I did think about writing the lyrics on the notepad but I thought that was to played out maybe I should of because of what I was trying to accomplish, it would of fit. I do agree the video came off strong then went kind of plain but what I really need to do in my videos is make little things stand out better because its the little things that catch the viewers eye, & yes my videos come out very simple i know but instead of seeing flashy rap videos I try to make it something else. lol. We were going to do a park scene of him walking around thinking about his thoughts but I thought inside would be cooler. lol. I really enjoyed that you took the time to fully look over my video. I hope to make a better one in the future!
