I bought a Phillips PET708 Portable DVD player with an extra screen http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/catalog/tree/en/us/consumer/portable_entertainment_gr_us_consumer/portable_dvd_players_ca_us_consumer/ce/_productId_PET708_37_US_CONSUMER/Portable_DVD_Player+PET708_37 to use the second monitor with the cam and I hooked it up and it doesn't work, first time i have tried this. I connected the cable that came with the player from the cams A/V1 port to the video input on the monitor, no signal. The screen has 2 input modes, hard to tell exactly what they mean, they are just icons that you choose on the screen, tried both. Also tried the Component cable that came with the cam to the video input on the monitor with no luck, although the component plugs were red, green and blue and the video input on the screen is yellow. Tried all 3. Called Phillips and they said it MAY not work unless the screen is first hooked up to the player. The second screen SHOULD work by itself as a monitor, shouldn't it? It has standard video (yellow RCA) and audio inputs.

thanks, roger

Component doesn't work on composite inputs. You can test the second screen by plugging a VCR or a tabletop DVD player to see if that works. If not, the video circuit may be in the Philips DVD player. I checked these out at Costco. The resolution on these is only 234 pixels vertical. And brightness 200 cd/m2.

For around $200-250 you can pick up a VGA/composite CarPC monitor, hi resolution 800 x 400, 400 cd/2 good enough for HD focusing.

Thanks, I had to try it, now I know. Got the screen to work but there was a bluish cast over the left 2/3 of the monitor so I returned it. Those specs and prices you gave me for better quality monitor, which monitor is that for?

Those are for Lilliputs, Dynamix and Eonon. It may be best to get one with VGA and composite inputs.

Since these are meant for cars, it takes a little work to get them working with a camera. ie power source and inputs. We got the Dynamix because its 8.4" and quite thin. Running it on a 12v sealed lead acid battery. If you want a low price, you may have to bid for them on ebay. The eonon is 9.2" for $199 but there are no specs on brightness. For HD it's best to use a Component to VGA converter like the Mayflash,

However, the component input isn't bad . The Magnify button on the A1 works on the bigger LCD.

If you can afford $800-$1400 you can get an Ikan HD monitor or Marshall !!

The second copy of the monitor works fine and through a BNC adaptor, hope I didnt screw up the first one with those component inputs I tried. The player and extra screen were $196, if I sell the player by itself on EBay the screen itself should end up costing less than $100 which is fine, the brightness is enough, turned all the way up and it will be used just for framing and thats about it. If I need better info i can look at the LCD. For now it will work just fine for my needs.

Any one want to buy a Phillips portable DVD player?
