F55: Feature Tour Of The F55

[/QUOTE]
I actually like the look of the Red. ALSO CONCRATS to Mitch/AbelCine who rented the Red One to those who shot "Winter's Bone" which is one of my favorite movies. And right now in the independent world everyone keeps asking for RED RED RED. But I am waiting to see if the F5, F55 can deliver a more filmic look than so far have shown. Someone on here did mention that through a process some of the past footage(raw) can be made out to look as nice as the F65/Arri Alexa but more will be revealed. So I guess I am going to drag my feet on this and wait. I am actually hoping that the F5 can be made to create this more cinematic look as the F55 would completely financially wipe me out and then some. And I also worry that some client may ask it I have the F55(top camera - excluding F65(not in price range)) and not want the lower end Sony F5 camera. As for Epic, it is their "top dog".

I feel your pain ! I am going backwards and forwards between the f55 and the f5 trying to decide. Like you the f55 is just that bit too expensive but then I look at its more useable - compressed 4k mode which the f5 doesn't have. Raw is fantastic but I know many of my shoots won't need it but a nice 10 bit 4k to shoot and master on would be fantastic. If I could connect the f5 to an external 4k recorder and record 10 bit then I can live with minor rolling shutter etc. it's frustrating, I need to move to a larger sensor camera - currently shooting 2/3 inch p2 but clients are wanting the large sensor look more and more and dslrs drive me mad.

I also wonder if just around the corner everyone is going to go medium format/large format stills camera crazy ? as soon as those cameras get video mode you can bet the agencies will start asking for them.

Remeber theoreticaly, you can rent a KIPRO quad for the F5 for the times when you need, 4k. No need to marry yourself to the 4k RAW recorder.

I asked Sony's Juan Martinez at an F5 showing and he said that there is NO 4k out. The only way to get 4K is with it's recorder.

oh wow... that sucks.

so no log to compressed 4k workflow. more like a scarlet then....

A scarlet that does simultaneous, file matched offlines. I wanted to say a Scarlet with a Meizler, but that's not terribly accurate.

And is two stops faster :)

The rumoured Panasonic 4k varicam apparently has 4k on board recording as AVC ultra which I think is similar to the F55's on board 4k codec. I think NAB will be interesting this year. The lack of ability to record compressed 4k from the F5 really limits it in my opinion. The f55 is just a little too expensive for me but the f5 with the ability to output 4k when needed - to a ki pro etc would be perfect.

Oh, everybody always says that.

:D

In the Rule Boston video, Mr. Martinez says quickly that they are investigating the possibility of opening the multipin connector on the back of the camera to 3rd parties.

That opens the door to enabling a 3rd party 4K compressed recorder, but it's kind of a lotta "ifs"

I bet a lot of people are!
It's the first thing we thought of here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...ptions&p=1986263778&highlight=#post1986263778

At the moment, the F5 is a much better bet for people working in broadcast TV but, depending on how many F5's get bought, can you image what the demand for such a connector will be once TV goes 4K? Obviously, Sony aren't going to make it easy until we see how many F55's get sold to people on the bleeding edge, but once the market settles down...

As written in this thread perhaps consider the FS700 4k raw route for a mere $12k.

I think a lot of people are missing the genius of the F55. We technical people and craftsmen like to talk about RAW, but most clients don't like it. It means more work for them. but they like the idea of 4K, or at least the potential for later use. With the F55 one can record HD and 4K at the same time, in matching files, on the same card. They are both video, they are both in what would be considered acceptable delivery formats. The XDCAM HD could be a delivery format now with the 4K available for archiving should the footage be put to use later in a higher resolution format. Or the HD could be used for easy editing now, with the 4K then used for a conform to finished product. Either way the file names are identical, there's never a worry about the timecode matching or the material separating (they're on the same damn card!), and there's no external box of any kind attached to the camera.

If you have a client who is into the idea of a full out 4K RAW workflow, then you can slap on the R5 and go for it. But if you want to make it easy for them and you and still deliver great quality 4K, then the integration Sony offers in the F55 can't be beat.

I think the issue for a lot of people with the f55 isn't the cost but the cost of sticking your neck out too far
financially given the rapid speed of advancements. For me I would be happy to spend 50k to set up an f5 if it meant
a camera that kept me competitive for the next 5 Years. I bought a hpx 3000 and while its still a brilliant camera the dslr
Craze kicked in hard to that market leaving a lot of 2/3 inch owners scratching their heads as clients asked to sshoot
on dslrs. I am leaning toward an f55 purchase but I wonder who is buying the f55 and what the longevity will be?
