GH2 Feature Film Teaser for Splitting Bethany - Shot on GH2

How'd you get the widescreen? Cropped? Anamorphic?

If the former, what'd you use for framing guides? If the latter, which lenses?

Respect! DP'ing and directing - this is very interesting. On the one hand challenging as hell, both need full time attention. On the other hand, when you DP yourself, it changes how you see the movie as a director. It's strange. Also I think it depends when you involve the DP in the process, if you just intend to direct - if you involve him early on, it's good, but I noticed that if you do a ton of preparation with storyboards, perhaps shooting test footage etc., and only involve the DP late in the process, you can experience anxiety when the DP is working, because you don't have full control over what s/he's doing... of course, some directors prefer to just delegate, and focus on other aspects of directing, and no question it's tough to give your full attention to all aspects when you have to do such major jobs as DP'ing and directing at the same time. Very interested in how you felt about the process, since you've done both. Congratulations on getting it done, and the footage looks very nice.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Jim - I just cropped everything in post. My on board monitor didn't have any guides for 2.35, so I ended up just using tape on the monitor as a marker/guideline.

OldCorpse - Yes it was a huge challenge to do both, although what I've learned from it is that I want to do it again. I'm very hands on and find that DP'ing and editing my own projects allows me to have complete control over the elements that are most important to me. What I would do differently next time though is have more camera support crew. I would still like to operate the camera myself, but would prefer to have experienced 1st and 2nd AC's that could ensure things run smoothly and allow me more freedom to work with the actors as opposed to setting up lights/changing lenses. But with a skeleton crew we all had to wear many hats!

This is incredible. In the past few months, all kinds of amazing GH2 footage has been coming out. A lot of GH2 feature films- that after these past 2 years, are finally catching the light of day. The sound is amazing!

Can you go over what you used for dialog? The audio alone seriously takes this film above most other indie features... it's really well done. What mic, recorder? Any editing tips to get dialog sounding as crisp as you have here?

Thanks for the info, Noam. Yes, that's what I was thinking re: control. There is nothing that makes you feel closer to having control over the image than being able to frame it yourself... many directors (f.ex. Ridley Scott) expressed a desire to operate the camera themselves (but are prevented from doing so by guild rules), precisely because of that. I guess, as an indie, it's one of the rare perks of not working in a hollywood production (since everything else is usually much harder for indies). And yes, I can see wanting more support crew to take care of all the busywork... hey, isn't that what wives and girlfriends are for :)

I love the trailer!! Very professional looking... the dop is very knowlegeable about lighting and camerawork.

I'd say its one of the best samples of filming done with the Ghx series.

My first post on dvxuser and i must say the quality of this films is exceptional. Looking forward to seeing more from you. How was it shooting with the SLR Magic lens?

Thanks a lot guys, glad you all enjoyed it!

L1N3ARX - Our location sound guy was really great. He had some vintage shotgun mics he was using but nothing overly fancy in terms of other gear. Everything was run through a basic field mixer and went into a zoom. I'll try to get some more details for you as I'm not sure what he used specifically. I was also really happy with the results.

Wolfenbarg - I used a lot of natural light, a Lowell Pro lighting kit and occasionally a small LED light to light the inside of the car, and nightime interiors of the house.
