FD Reverse Ring - Aperture control?

I was looking into getting a reverse ring for macro work, I have a GH1 with an FD adapter, a 24/2.8 and a 50/1.4. Both 52mm threads
The aperture of FD lenses can only be controlled when the lens is attached to a body.
In the case of a reverse ring the lens is mounted on the body at the 'front' end through the 52mm threads.
I read somewhere that you could cut out a rear lens cap so you could control the aperture when on a reverse ring.
I tried it myself and the iris is wide open when the lens cap is attached BUT I can't stop down like when I'm on a body.
I would like to do this for sharpness, DOF and exposure reasons, as it would be quite difficult to put an ND on the 'rear' end of a lens.
So my questions are: What's the difference between a rear cap and a body? Why doesn't it let me control aperture? What would be another solution for this?
