FCPX When?

... and there came a day where we just had to realize that what it WAS, was no longer what it IS. And we had to move on. And it was profoundly annoying, but sooner or later you had to accept that Vegas was no longer for everyone, it was a product designed to support and move Sony camcorders.

I think there are manhy people who have spent years and years and tens of thousands of dollars investing in the FCP/Mac system, who are realizing today that they may not be able to continue doing so, if the app they need isn't offered anymore and the app that replaces it, doesn't do what they need. We can say "just switch, the water's fine over here" but that's of no comfort to the person whose entire apple cart has just been upended...

amen...

So this is it then?

FCP X has been released and never will be updated.

Nothing will be added in future releases, because there won't be future releases.

For those here that are claiming that their investments in Macs and FCP are worth nothing, then I have to wonder.

I don't know if Apple will incrementally add new professional features to X or not. Perhaps they will, and perhaps they won't.

But whom of those claiming that Apple won't update and revise this application actually knows?

I don't, and I'd love to learn the basis for those that they claim do.

Otherwise, isn't everyone just guessing?

Okay, well... hold on... the question of whether it's new, or an update, really depends on the status of FCS. Someone else said FCS (FCP 7) was considered "end of life". If that's the case, then yes those editors do need to look at FCP X as a replacement, and then its various omissions become a major concern.

If FCS/FCP 7 is indeed NOT EOL, but will continue on, then we just have a case of mismatched expectations and it would be as you say -- FCP X would become another tool in the kit, standing alongside FCE and iMovie and FCS as a member of a larger family.

Apple announced that they are ending support for FCP 7, which would mean it is meant to be replaced. It would appear to me that they are suggesting people would use the two systems together during a period of transition. If you believe what is on the internet, some of those omissions are going to addressed coming soon. Who knows what the real story will be. I will probably just buy it, as I have run Final Cut up to now. If it proves to be a flop, I already have CS5.5 production premium.

No FCP7 import. No XML/OMF export. No multicam.

No more Final Cut for me.

And extremely limited tape-based import is also a pretty big issue for pro workflows.

Multicam is coming. Discussing the release with a friend at Apple, his input was that a ground up 1.0 release can't have everything and that a lot of the missing features will come online as free updates.

This blows my mind. I have hundreds of projects in FCP and the idea that I could never return to any of them and use pieces of them for future projects (which I do all the time) is really sad.

It seems like FCP X is maybe a good idea for someone starting out. But for those of us who have been using FCP for years, I can't believe they don't even have an import tool.

I'm really bummed about this.

Chris, I too want to update, even redo old projects in X for an anthology of my old stuff. But again. Ground up 1.0 release. Maybe that transfer ability will never come. But too soon for giving up I think.

However, these things are apparently coming.

Hence the Larry Jordan quote stating that it was not yet ready for professional use.
Can't argue that much, but does depend on what you need to some extent. Last project I did that would be a deal breaker. Current project. So far looks like FCP X has everything I need and the things I always wanted but didn't have in previous FCP versions.

Haven't bothered to throw away $299 on FCPX. Although I saw this coming, I'm just so disappointed with Apple. They don't care about their pro users. If they do, they better get their asses in gear and release some proper software. I want XML, multicam, backwards compatibility, Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro with blu-ray support, and Color.
Color is part of FCP X now and that's one of the things I've always wanted was to be able to Grade in FCP. You couldn't really do it, even though I and many did, due to the 8 or 10 bit color sampling limit which quickly introduced banding. Soundtrack pro is probably gone. But many functions are in FCP X and more will come. DVD Studio pro is gone. Jobs wants everything to be Cloud Based and for those that insist on burning a disc, limited features in compressor and FCP X are meat to suffice.

Okay, well... hold on... the question of whether it's new, or an update, really depends on the status of FCS. Someone else said FCS (FCP 7) was considered "end of life". If that's the case, then yes those editors do need to look at FCP X as a replacement, and then its various omissions become a major concern.

So I guess the big question is -- is FCP X intended to replace FCP 7 or not? if it is, then all the complaints would seem to be justified. If it is not, and the two products will be offered side by side, then those who complain that a $299 product doesn't do everything a $1200 product does, just need a bit of a reality check to put their expectations back in line.

Anybody know which is the real story?

In the Apple online store, I can't find any reference to the FCS or FCP 7. it looks like FCP X is indeed a replacement for FCP 7. According to Wikipedia, Final Cut Express has also been discontinued, replaced by FCP X. It does look like both lines have been folded down all into just FCP X.
FCP 7 is EOL. The whole reason for FCP X was that FCP 7 and prior was based on archetecture that was 10 years old and just couldn't support the new direction.
Okay, well, hence the frustration. FCPX doesn't do everything that FCS did, and Apple will now never ever upgrade FCS. So all the hoped-for features, all the complaints about it being lagging behind the competition -- well, there's no place for those folks to go.

They will never get the updates they wanted (and needed).

And FCX doesn't do what they need.

So -- doesn't it seem reasonable that they'd be cheezed?
We don't know what all FCP X will or won't do within the next 6 months. We do know it will do MANY of the things that people are having heart attacks over (that they can still do on 7) with the release of free updates. Things like Multi Cam edit.

And one thing to remember / consider. The new FCP X is about the price of an UpGrade.

One can wait until it's fleshed out with most everything 7 has, or buy it now and play in the sandbox so they're ahead of the curve when that time comes.

Or use it now like I am. It imports video. It cuts video. It applies transitions and effects and finally .. FINALLY what I've been missing and almost jumped to Premiere for (which I could never get to work well on my Mac) color sampling that's robust enough to do serious, serious color grading and post.

Part of the reason those upgrades will never come is because FCP7 at it's core architecture was not capable of doing those things. Quicktime's old architecture was made in 1991. And FCP7 is/was rooted in that and limited by it. This upgrade is FCP moving past classic QT. It's an ugly transition, but it's gotta be done to enable further progress to Final Cut. Just like any product that gets transitioned (anyone remember OS9 to OSX, or Apple's PowerPC to Intel), it's a big transition and it messes everything up for a bit, but in the end makes things much better.

As to people being pissed/frustrated, it's understandable. But sticking with what you know and like for a good while won't hurt anything. FCPX will grow. Whether it will become what everyone has hoped for, remains to be seen.

EXACTLY

Trust me, I understand this better than you may know. In general, this is exactly the kind of thing that us rabid Vegas fans went through when Sony bought Vegas. It stopped growing in the ways we expected, and it seriously shifted focus. And we were mad, because we had invested years in knowing the software, years in learning its intricacies, we'd upgraded over and over and over...

... and there came a day where we just had to realize that what it WAS, was no longer what it IS. And we had to move on. And it was profoundly annoying, but sooner or later you had to accept that Vegas was no longer for everyone, it was a product designed to support and move Sony camcorders.

We can say "just switch, the water's fine over here" but that's of no comfort to the person whose entire apple cart has just been upended...

Again, this whole new software is the price of an upgrade, and the old software just couldn't do what this one could as explained to me by "technical people" that "know about software". It was limited. So Apple could keep investing in making a dying product better. Or do what they've always done since they control the Hardware and the Software, engineer them together to break new ground and go further.

FCP 7 works now as well as FCP ever did again, for me, hitting that hard wall of image quality that gives you banding and noise in post if you push too hard (too hard meaning where you have to go for an aesthetically competitive image in narrative work).

So it can be stuck with for a while. But can't expect apple to keep giving life support to a dying horse. Some point you gotta shoot it and get a new horse.

I look at it like this. Someone said "hey here's a new NLE for $299 that cuts video, and you can grade the hell out of it with the highest quality. Bad news, some features are not online yet. Good news, it's optimized with Apple hardware to do amazing things. There'll be a learning curve. But not as steep as switching to Adobe". That's it for me, right now, anyway.

@jack daniel stanley - how will you monitor the footage you're grading? No point in 10-bit color and powerful color correction tools if you can't view it properly. With FCPX there's currently no way to get a clean output to a grading monitor.

As much as I'd like to use it now, I can't. It doesn't have the features I need. And as much as I hear "sources say this" and "updates are coming," I have to edit with what's available now.

I'm cutting a multi-cam piece right now, which I'll have to send to an audio post facility for finishing. FCPX is a non-starter right now for me, and as someone who knows Avid and has a copy of Premiere loaded, I see little point in waiting for what might come when I can embrace one of two editing suites that serves my needs now.

I'll stay tuned for updates and upgrades, as any smart editor should. But I have to choose the right tool for the jobs I have at hand.

that's not entirely true. what i read was that with an AJA card (which i have installed on several machines) and their new driver, you're good to go. I'll let you know in a minute as i'm about to download FCPX.

I keep telling myself, "just wait...". I know the bugs will be worked out and it will be easier to transition once the dust has settled

BUT

Its also just so much fun to jump in head first. I think I'd rather be one of those early-adoptor guinea pigs on this one. +1 grading inside of FCP! +1 no render bars!

Heh, you would think the genius's behind the iPod, iPhone & iPad would have a few focus groups with experienced editors
before releasing a maimed piece of software. This is epic fail in the marketing world.
It does not matter that it only costs $299.00
Apple should know better by now. FCP X should be beyond FCP 7. It should include at least everything that 7 had.
I would rather pay more for an FCP 8 upgrade.

Apple seems to be blowing off the pros. I think the stock price of Adobe just went up.

It only seems to extend your desktop. So unplug a monitor, run FCPX on one monitor, and the AJA feeds your broadcast monitor preview quality footage as if its just another computer monitor. If i read the pdf right its not a broadcast quality feed. May as well grade on your computer monitor.

It's not FCP X that will never be updated, it's Final Cut Studio that has reached the end of its commercial lifespan (as far as support from Apple is concerned). One thing that's absolutely clear is that there will be no future releases of Final Cut Studio. While FCP X has a similar name and shares a common marketing legacy, it is a fundamentally different product and there is currently no way to transition and maintain current Final Cut Studio projects with FCP X.

Professionals who have built a post-production workflow on Final Cut Studio must determine whether it makes sound business sense to continue to invest in a discontinued video production system. Those who decide to switch must now invest time and resources into developing a new workflow, whether it is based on FCP X or on one of its established competitors.

I understand.

It's the same situation in some respects to when NLEs first appeared.

A fundamentally different way to do things.

I am still on the fence on it. I'm file based, so it has just about all I need.

For tape based, and i/o needs, it might work, or it won't.

But FCS3 still does

I'm not giving up, yet. I am a huge Apple and FCP fan.

I am just truly and honestly STUNNED that even a 1.0 release does not include the ability work with my old project files. Maybe I'm overreacting, but it just seems like a big FU to the vibrant community.

I want to believe it's coming, but I fear they are going after the low hanging fruit (millions of iMove customers who want more functionality) and leaving thousands of pro users in the dust.

I really hope I'm wrong.

wow... Jack I need to know the secret in how you can post some many different quotes in the same post... lol

LOL. I use Quote Post Pro X.
SRSLY though - look to the right of "respond with quote", there's a little speech balloon with a quotation mark and a plus sign in it. Click that and it adds that quote, repeat with each successive quote, the with the final quote hit the standard "reply with quote" button and they'll all show up.

As much as I'd like to use it now, I can't. It doesn't have the features I need. And as much as I hear "sources say this" and "updates are coming," I have to edit with what's available now.

Of course sir. Yeah if you want to plug it in to a professional workflow that demands lots of versatility and compatibility (as is the standard these days) then it's a no go. For me at least, a guy who grades in FCP despite how many times Stu Maschwitz told us not to, who could never get into the FCP color work flow, who tried and failed with CS5 (hardware was beyond me), this has the features I've been wanting so badly in FCP for so long.

Have a project I've expressly held of working on til this, which it "should" be great for. But where you're coming from makes sense.

Hah. I love just mousing over the particle effects and seeing them magically animate on the selected clip before they've even been applied!

I don't know if Apple is blowing off the pros. I know a pro video application is not what he wanted when he bought FCP from Macromedia. He wanted iMovie. And there's been internal tension ever since.

With FCPX Apple's adopted what seems like a completely bonkers strategy. It seems like this is intended for Pro's AND Soccer parents. Kind of like "strong enough for a pro but made for a soccer mom". And we know what happens when you serve two masters.

So maybe not a blow off, just an insane cake and eat it too approach.

One point I can't argue with you on. Yeah. Not great PR. Hopefully Jobs won't have a press conference where he comes out singing and dancing saying if you don't like it don't buy it, like he did with the iPhone

I think stunned would be right for any update to an existing version that already had it. But for 1.0, and given the fact that you can still use FCP 7, I'd put it in the sorely missed, just not done yet category. If it was dropped between FCP 6 and 7. That's idiotic and an FU. Between FCP 7 and completely new from the ground up? FU is knee jerk to me. If it's not here in 6 months that's gross negligence. Not within a year, that's an FU. But I've never built complex software from Zero so I'm not going to ascribe motive to missing elements, such as "they hate us.". The way it was explained to me is that it just can't all be done at once. I don't know if that's true or not, but I suspect it is. If the updates come along that are significant enough to get it to pro standards and versatile enough to be pro, AND they're free, then we'll know that was the case. Or at least it's the case that all that couldn't be done within the timeframe they set for release. If the updates are not updates but upGRADES and cost significant $. Then that's some BS. My feeling is that they couldn't do it all within the release timeline they set, and that a lot will come online in the next few months. It was INCREDIBLY bad judgement on their parts to not prepare people for the process though. "It will be available at this date, but it will not be complete. Features like X,Y, and Z will be rolled out in the next 3 to 6 months" or something.

On the grading topic. I just read that there is no lift / gamma / gain only global midtone and highlight control

some someone please confirm this?

I believe Lift / Gamma Gain is Shadow, Midtone, Highlight on this system.
plus you have an overall button

From my screen:
attachment.php

Random internet definition saying those terms are often interchangeable:
"Depending on the system, color wheel controls are often labeled as lift/gamma/gain or shadows/midtones/highlights or pedestal/gamma/video. Some systems also include a fourth color wheel control that acts as a master balance/level control."
http://digitalfilms.wordpress.com/2007/03/
Though sometimes not. Color (the application) had Lift, Gamma, Gain, and Shadow, Midtone, Highlight if I recall correctly, with Lift Gamma Gain, in that instance, being for finer tuning.

Supposedly FCP's old color wheels weren't isolated enough, adjusting a bit more of each other than one would like, hence, Colorista, which was supposedly more isolated wheel to wheel. Not the wheels themselves of course, but what they controlled.

Without fully kicking the tires, the Shadow Midtones Highlights controls in X seem more versatile and isolated and control the same areas of the image as Lift Gamma Gain (though with more isolation), plus an overall control.
