FCPX help and answers

if editing clips with sound to a soundtrack and you just want the audio, you can solo the audio track and yet it still shows the video, but video audio is muted (the soundtrack audio becomes soloed). Obviously if you add sound effects you'll need to change the approach: try selecting all clips, edit audio in inspector and drag all the way down. Or, break apart audio and delete or hit "v" to disable

I posted the same thing this morning: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...e-5D-footage&p=2370986&viewfull=1#post2370986

What I find is that some X-Rite profiles work fine and others don't. Apples own "calibration" is a joke and does not create color accurate screens. Hardware puck is a must for color accuracy. I will try some testing later, but it may also be as simple as what settings within a profile are used, meaning any custom gammas like 2.1 instead of standard 2.2 or other settings when making a screen calibration profile.

Hopefully the new Colorsync in FCPX will fix the gamma shift issues that have been around forever and infuriating!

Hey, quick question. Will I be able to run X on my computer? I have been getting conflicted answers from people. I have an Imac from 07 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores:2 L2 Cache. 4 MB MemoryATY, RadeonX1600 256mb vram.

I'm 99% sure I can, almost all the macs from 07 CAN'T, but it looks like the Radeon x1600 256vram can. I just wanted to double check with you guys.

I know this isn't the ideal computer for X, but I want to give it a test run before I decide if I'm sticking with Apple or not.

How do i do a basic fade up and fade down internally in a clip?

Actually it's quite easy. Click on the little icon on the top left side of the click, select video animation, just drag the opacity handles to where you want the fades to end.

is there a way to disable the orange bar that scrims over the video in the timeline? if i want to scroll over the video i want to do it with the playhead and not that orrange bar. thanks

EDIT: Nevermind i figured it out

Has anyone had an Event disappear from their library (or whatever you want to call it)? I had created one event and dragged several folders of footage in there, then played around in a Project. Now today I open up FCPX again, and my timeline is still visible, but all the other clips that were in my Event, along with the event itself, are not showing up in FCPX. I can see them sitting on my hard drive in Finder, and I can even double-click the Event file to try to open it up in FCPX, but it just shows me my Project (aka Timeline) again.

Very strange behavior...

I'm having the exact same problem. the clips look normal in thumbnail view but as soon as i scrub over them they turn dark and contrasty, as though a lut had been applied. they are also dark in the timeline.

My clips are from both a gopro and a 5dm2 and the problem is the same if i transcode the clips to prores as well.

if it's a gamma problem does anyone know a solution?

thanks in advance,
Bg

A friend of mine had 2 off-brand apple cinema displays and was having the same issue. In his system preferences under displays, he changed the updated cinema view setting to an older version and it worked fine. Not sure if it's the same solution for you, but thought i'd share it.

Did you ever figure this out yet? I've been trying to do this as well. Can't seem to figure it out.
Just read that it's not possible to do. However, maybe it's like Avid? There, you bring the filter into your bin and then from there, onto your clips.

** HOW TO COPY/PASTE EFFECTS **

I already answered this question, the article that says it is not possible to do is wrong. You go to the edit menu to copy the clip and use "paste effects"

I'm thinking about trying FCP X (I currently have FCS 2). I wouldn't be getting the new Compressor though. Does anyone know if I can use the old Compressor for the new FCP X files? I don't know if the 32 vs 64 bit has anything to do with compression or not. I have default Compressor parameters for outputting 720p for the web and was wondering if I could still use them just the same. Thanks.

I'm guessing you'd want the new Compressor for proper 64-bit, but also I'm guessing it properly will distribute across multiple cores, which the current FCP7 Compressor does not.

New Compressor will almost guaranteed get you faster render times and will keep your projects ColorSynced MUCH better than FCP7.

It's my understanding Compressor 4 is not 64bit like FCPX and Motion 5 are.

Thanks for the responses... does anyone know for sure whether the new Compressor is 64 bit and/or makes a difference using the old Compressor for FCP X files?

2 questions

2 questions

Trying to get 2 questions answered before I purchase FCPX.
1_ Is there any support at all for either RGB curves or import of LUT's when color correctioning?

2_ is there any ability to fine tune keyframes, such as with bezier keyframes, when time remapping?

This is part of my post for this coming Tuesday at www.fcpxtutor.com. I think it answers your questions about Compressor 4.

FCPX does not work with previous versions of Compressor. The new version of Compressor, Compressor 4, has changed very little from Compressor 3. The only new change I can find is that Qmaster, Apple's work distributer, is now built into Compressor 4 as opposed to a standalone app as in previous versions. But even after all of the hype over 64 bit FCPX and Motion 5, Compressor 4 is still 32 bit.

If you are dedicated to using FCPX, Compressor 4 will save you time and hassle. The "Send to Compressor" does not work with previous versions and FCPX can't export sections of a project. You have to export the entire project unless you send to Compressor and put in and out points.

I'll have some work arounds and other ideas in Tuesday's post.

Installing on a second 'drive'

Installing on a second 'drive'

Greetings

Can X be installed on a non boot drive? i.e. a second physical SSD.

I have FCS on my boot drive and I don't want X on the same drive. The Apple 'install blog' implies that X is designed to run on the boot drive. ???

thanks
