FCP Workflow

Alright, so there is a project that I am working on where I am trying to figure out some workflow issues. The project is a football season highlight reel. I'm trying to figure out the most efficient way to capture and edit the footage.

The way I see it the game footage should be shot on 720p/60 and then brought into FCP, using the panasonic plug in, convert all the footage to 29.97 and edit on a 29.97 timeline. When the editor wants regular speed, simply change the clip speed to 200% and when he wants slow-mo just use the regular speed footage.

My issues with this workflow is that it feels backwards from an editing standpoint: you have to change the speed to have it at normal speed and all the footage starts out in slow motion.

So here is the question: when shooting in non-native 720 mode, the HVX has to capture the footage at 60fps anyways and simply flags the frames it will keep after import and FCP throws away the extra frames correct? Would it be possible to simply capture at 720/30 and then somehow (This is the step I can't figure out at the moment) be able to use those discarded frames to create slow mo on demand? Ideally I'd like be able to edit the real time footage, figure out what needs slow motion and do the conversion and drop it into the time line without needing to render.

I am trying to avoid any rendering whatsoever. The director is intent on a certain look which makes heavy use of magic bullet, and those plug-ins already destroy my lil old powerbook, so anything that can streamline the workflow would be of much help.

As it stands my current workflow should work decently, but I figured I'd ask you guys to see if someone had a more elegant solution. I'm suing FCP 5.1.4 so I dont have access to all the goodies in FCP 6.0....yet.
