FCP not capturing direct

HDkilledFILM.

Burnin' down the House
Anyone else having this problem? I open the log and capture window check my settings (Uncon device, 1080i 60fps) click capture now and bam, dropped frames........ WTF? So I try shutting the computer down, restarting, booting FCP opening the log a capture window, checking my settings, clicking capture now, bam, dropped frames......... I cant get it to capture without this problem. My specs are: 1.67ghz laptop, 1 gig ram, FCP 5.0.4. When I import my P2 media it's fine, someone please tell me the problem is me and not my system.

It could be a lot of things.
I can't be sure but I would hazard a guess that your system hasn't enough muscle. Slow processor, is your hard disk 7200 rpm? You're trying to import 60 fps. That takes a lot of power.
Try switching off any file backup systems that operate in the background logging all operations.
Sorry I can't be more specific

I read somewhere that the best results where accomplished with the camera via Firewire into the machine, but not saved to the disk (most laptop disks are less than 7200 rpm) - And not to an external firewire disk trough the other firewirew 400 or 800 port you have, but though the PCMCIA slot which has a firewire 800 connector, connected to an external Hard Disk...

Complicated? Yes, I hope it gets a lot easier to say the least.

How about capturing through Firewire and writing to a USB2 external disk, the usb controller is on a separate pci bus

No USB with FCP... I think part of the issue here is that a firewire external drive (which Apple has never recommended for editing) cannot keep up with 1080i material. Personally, I would import P2 footage from P2 card in PC slot to firewire drive. Then, transfer the footage to a G5 desktop with raid for editing.

I'm thinking this is the only way, I have tried all other solutions and still am getting dropped frames. No prob with the 7200rpm hd I have it and it doesnt work, usb 2.o and still dropped frames. I'd be interested in hearing peoples thoughts on if this has worked for them..........

Maybe you should try running all the maintance tasks for OSX, McJanitor can take care of that, also try making the drive you're capturing onto non-journaled

I think if one must use the firewire option on a PB G4, best bet is to use a cardbus firewire card in the PC slot and attach FW800 drive to it. Bring the firewire from the HVX into the onboard FW400 port. I have successfully edited 720p24Native on a PB G4 (17" latest model) with FW800 drive. But this was only a very short piece to demo the HVX to a group (still can't afford one-- bring up violin track). I have edited DV pieces in the field with PB but if I am doing anything more intensive than simple transitions, titles and basic motion fx, I would be very hesitant to edit on a PB. I tend to acquire, do a rough cut in field and then bring everything back to my G5 with 2 tb SATA raid... overkill for DV or even 720pNative but I think important for 1080i.

Capturing to the same drive as the system software is asking it to breath in and out at the same time. You have to get an 800 drive on a seperate bus. Maybe you can get away with it for a short time at 720p but not 1080.

Grab a Cardbus firewire card, and connect the camera to that.

Use the 7200 rpm external FW drive connected to the FW800 onboard bus.

Only way it will work reliably.
