FCP Import

Just a question for questions sake - I.ve never used anything beyond FCP with my HVX, I.ve never had the import problem that people talk about, but disregarding that problem, people always say that FCP lags behind other systems for importing of P2 clips? What do they do differently [as I haven.t used them]? To me the input system for FCP seems fine, I can preview and imput the clips I want etc. Just wondering what features I.m supposedly 'missing'.

Thanks,
Mark.

Actually FCP's P2/MXF handling is very good. The biggest problem with it is that it doesn't support them natively, and re-wraps the information in QuickTime containers.

That takes a little bit of time, and consumes additional disk space. Some people delete the original data files from the P2 cards following this step, but that's alot like burning your negatives.

Barry makes a case for meta data, its importance, and editing directly from mxf files. I respect his opinion, but I don't have issues with my workflow

I've been doing it for a year come March 2nd and don't know what I'm missing.

Perhaps when FCP supports direct use of MXF file, the veil will be removed, but I haven't had any problems or issues.

Oh, I see...it.s the quicktime conversion. I always just offload the full mxf data on to my laptop and worry about converting into quicktime via fcp till later when I.m editing and have the time to do so. I always then keep the quicktime files to work and just dump the .mxf onto an external drive. Not sure about the meta data...I.ve never had any need of that.
