OK, I am a looser, I know.. but I am not a MAC person.. Got my buddy's PowerBook G4 1.33ghz with 1.5gigs ram, and Final Cut Pro, version 5.0.4.. I have the HVX-200.. shot about 40 gigs worth of footage... Transfered it to a external HD.. (yes I have the .txt file and the contents, for each P2 card.. all in seperate directorys..

First thing first.. I OPEN FCP..

It asks me "SELECT SEQUENCE PRESET"
I go down to DVCpro HD 720/24p and select it..
I then get an ERROR saying "Codec not found, you may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card" ?????

I press ok, and it does open some sort of project..
NEXT:
I goto IMPORT MEDIA, and select the P2 MEDIA selection..
I see all the thumbnails and timecodes, and file names.. I select one, and try to import it and it gives me another error saying "one or more P2 clips failed to import. Probable incomplete or corrupt files" ?!?!?@Q#$?@#$%?#$%??#@$ AHHHHH!!!!

WHY IS THIS SO HARD?!?!?

PLEASE HELP MEEEEEEEEE :-)

Hey Jeff, yes the last clip files are there.. (contents and lastclip.tct in the same place)
I have read a few things on different posts suggesting that I might have to re-install FCP?! Has to do with the missing codecs..

I'm going to attempt to help but I may be waaaay of base.

First, was Final Cut Pro installed properly? Is it "borrowed" software? It sounds like the Panasonic codec is either missing or corrupt and therefore FCP can't read the P2 footage. If FCP is giving you an error message saying "Codec NOT FOUND" (especially while trying to create a simple project sequence) then... well... I'd say there's your problem.

Try repairing permissions using the Disk Utility program. If that does not work, you may want to try reinstalling the Panasonic codecs. I'm sure either the Final Cut disc will have a custom install option or you might be able to find the all the codecs you need at Panasonic's website.

If I'm totally off base though, I do have one fool proof solution. Since you're a PC guy, just go buy some Dell hardware, use Vegas, and mail that old, useless Mac stuff to:

That guy will dispose of it properly for you. And he won't even charge you!

Oye...

Nice... I'll think about it.... This version of FCP is 100% legit.. I wish it was that easy.. :furious3:

I read something about upgrading to TIGER... that it sometimes erases or misplaces codecs???? How? I have no idea...

Oh well.. My friend cant get me the CD's till tomorrow..

Thanks for the help.. and keep posting ideas if anyone can come up with something else :-(

We had this same problem with one of our two apple laptops on our last shoot. We did a complete reinstall of FCP and everything worked perfectly. Not quite sure what went wrong, but since the reinstall no problems whatsoever.

So far, no go with any suggestions except for the re-install, which I can't do till tomorrow when I get the CD's from friend..

Thanks for you help everyone! I will post my results tomorrow when I complete the re-install..

justin,

make sure the following items are in the following place:
place: MacintoshHD[or whatever your drive is called]->Library->Quicktime

inside that folder, the following components need to exist (FCP reinstall will do this, but if they've been moved (you can search for them on the drive):

DVCPROHDVideoOutput.component
DVCPROHDVideoOutputClock.component
DVCPROHDCodec.component
DVCPROHDVideoDigitizer.component
DVCPROHDVideoOutputCodec.component
DVCPROHDMuxer.component

Although this probably won't help your FCP problem, double check/reinstall the actual P2 software that came with the HVX to your Mac.

I didn't originally install the software and had no problems at first because I was hooking my cam directly up to my G5 in firewire mode and importing the clips directly into FCP. Then I did the Ext. HD thing and copied entire folders to a drive; later tried to Import them into FCP and got errors. I ran the p2 software and installed the drivers and was able to import directly from the saved 'reel' folders I had made on the Ext. HD.

Got It!!! Thank You Everyone!!!

Got It!!! Thank You Everyone!!!

CMessineo, you nailed it! Re-installing FCP worked! It replaced the missing codec files!

If this happens to anyone else, don't forget to upgrade to 5.0.4 after doing your re-install..

NOW I CAN EDIT!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you everyone for your help!!! :dankk2:
