FCP 6 - Consolidation Issues

I'm having issues with a project using FCP 6... I've been working on a doco and have consolidated down the project...

Now more times than not when I open the project I've lost my render links... what's even more weird is that most times it
shows me a blue rendered bar but when you hit playback it displays needs rendering...

Also if I try and reconnect the media it wants to reconnect to the original media not the rendered media...

All very frustrating as I'm trying to close this doco off...

It was shot 1080i using P2.. ingested by various versions of FCP over the past 12mths... there's about 4 terabytes of raw material
that's consolidated to a couple of 100 gigs..

Anybody else having these issues...

Cheers

PS have updated all my software.. G5 Dual 2.5 ..4 gigs ram.. 750gigs + 250GB SATA

Try trashing your FCP prefs. And update to 10.4.10 using the combo updater, not the incremental updater from software update.

Many of us have said for years that it is not a good idea to upgrade software in the middle of a project.

Thanks will give it a go... but I'm working on a doco that might take a couple of years to put together so not upgrading is not an option... I remember FCP was kinda flaky with it's consolidation a few issues back ...FCP 4 was just useless for me and went to Avid but unfortunately Avid had so many problems that I've migrated back to FCP over the last 2 years...

No nest or sub clips.. just straight cuts/dissolves plus Ae Imports, Shake Imports, SmoothCam clips which have all been brought in as complete movie clips...

I'm finding that I have to constanly go back through my archivers to find a project that has not been messed up...

I'm just starting to think that I might need to trash working with consolidated projects and batch digitise to the original P2 media... but that's going to be a pain as there are so many hard drives that the propject has spanned through over the past 12mths..

Is there a way to re-link the project to say the original P2 imports which would be much quicker than to a batch digitize... as I've got the original working projects on 7 firewire drives and 1 Sata USB...

Cheers

SATA USB? No such thing. I think in part you just have files all over the place and, if anything, I would just create one large raid with all of your files rather than having things scattered across 8 drives. What I would do is rebuild your project by creating a more manageable system-- namely your data on one fast reliable storage medium-- and then just trashing old render files or anything else that is bogging down the system.

There's now way that it's going to fit on one system.. unless we spring for a optical drive or such.. that's why I've consolidated the project down to the internal drive... The USB drive is just a Sata drive in a USB case...

The project is spread between 7 Firewire drives with P2 converted media and about another 7 to 10 Back-up P2 media drives...

What I'm thinking is I'm just about done with the vision side of things... just need to update a few graphics.. which are done in AE anyhow.... and print out and edl...

Then I can locate all the master clips that have been imported already off the P2 Masters (will be a little bit of a pain but can live with it) and copy them to a new folder... I'll probably archive the master shots to DVD...

Then I was hoping to relink the project to the master clips.. I'm just hoping that the consolidated project will allow me to re-link (kinda like batch digitising without the digitising)...

Cheers

The issue at this stage is not the media management of the original edit (which are on firewire drives).. it's how FCP is handling the consolidated project and losing render files.. media it has copied to the new folder is fine... it's some sort of refresh issue that happens when I minimize or if I view a qt ref file that is associated with the project..

I might have found the culprit.. a piece of video that I turned into a still frame had not consolidated properly... ie .. it was not in the media folder of the project...

I've replaced the clip and will see how the project handles of the next few days...

Thanks... Cheers

Glad you found it... Whether FCP, Avid or any NLE, keeping track of 100's of hours of footage over multiple drives is a real strain both for system and operator.

Yep.. tell me about it... but I must admit FCP has been pretty good to date.. was a bit worried as I've also got avid and was worried about the media management with FCP...

Hoping to find out today if we've got a sale with the ABC for the doco..

Cheers.. Thanks
