FCP 5.1.2 Import issues...Query for you all

Good thought, but no. B001, B002...B067.

I am one of the first to deal with this camera, so I know nearly ALL the pitfalls.

But keep them coming. I might have missed some.

if any P2 is recognized right away, highlight it and hit delete.

BenB I'm sure your are aware of this and are careful enough to not have an issue, but in service of those that may not know...

A word of caution.

Avoid using delete to unmount your P2 volumes. It's not a problem if you are unmounting an automatically mounted p2 card or p2store partition because those files are locked, but trying to unmount an archive folder with the delete key will delete the footage from your archive drive unless it too is locked. Using delete at any point seems like asking for trouble and seems like a bad habit to get into. Instead use the Eject Button next to the little folder icon you mentioned in your post.

Sorry all,

just to understand about the initial question: how come some have firmware 2.00.. and others 3.00...? On Panasonic site there is no update on firmware or do I need to contact my reseller? Our HVX (dec'06) is 2.00....

FCP 5.1.2 or 5.1.3 on both pbook G4 or Pmac dual 2.0 G5 ('05) woks fine for us, either importing from P2 > Pbook or through HVX>firewire>G5. I did copied the NO NAME p2 8GB to the pbook/G5 HD and then renamed to P2 "name of the job 1..2..3". Then made a backup copy to our RAID 5 for archive. Then imported with FCP .

But another question:
I've noticed that the blacks on any shots when imprted to FCP window (Cinema Disply 23") looks quite darker than in the HVX Lcd or viewfinder or from the field Sony monitor we used on the set.
Is it normal? Should we set the FCP import gamma setting to a specific choice? We've always used "original" gamma import setting.

Thank you for your feedback!

The computer monitor is not an accurate representation of shot. I would rely upon your properly-calibrated Sony field monitor for exposure decisions. In post, output from FCP to monitor either via a capture card or Matrox MXO.

Apparently there was a communications error between me and the camera guy, I can't be on 3.03. I heard the latest version is 2.03...so I am awaiting confirmation.

The Camera LCD is never a good judge of quality...nor your computer monitor. This is why you have HD monitors on the set, and HD monitors in your edit bay.

I'll second the Matrox.

OK...chatted with the camera guys...our firmware version is 1.03...that MIGHT be the issue. I'll have them update tonight if they can so I can see if that changes things.

I used p2 log pro on all my old corrupted clips that I've kept on a hard drive. Everything (ALL CLIPS) imported. I had the original firmware when those clips were recorded. They have a free trial of the software. I'm on a MAC

import trouble in 5.1.4

import trouble in 5.1.4

i have found that the only clips i have trouble importing are ones that are 720p that are variable speed. i cannot get them into the system at all. i will point to a folder that has a mix of 1080, 720 and 720 variable speed. all come in except the variable speed footage.

i tried shane's idea of turning off the 'remove extra frames', but no help.

any ideas?

fcp 5.1.4
10.4.9
latest bits of all software etc.

thanks.

I know this is no help, but on my system with latest everything, it works just fine.

Then there's always P2 Log...

thanks ben. i don't have the hvx camera, but i have been trying to see how i can fit it into my workflow since i am going to pick up a new camera.

the only footage i have from it is from the dvd that panasonic sent me. some kung-fu footage shot at 720pN. i am now wondering if the footage on the dvd is broken in some way since some have mentioned putting a card back in the camera to 'fix' the footage.

would it be possible if you could send me like a 2 sec. clip of some 720pN at 60fps to see if it works with other footage?

i guess the whole content and lastclip.txt file would be needed, but if it is only like 2 sec. it would not be too big to email.

thanks.

Oops, my bad, meant unmount, not delete...

Regarding firmware, another avenue to consider is the firmware for the P2 card itself. Not sure how to dig that out, or whether Mac OS users can do anything about up-dating it easily, but I think I've some posts regarding card firmware.
Also there's something about turning off 'remove duplicate frames' on import solving import problems.
