Favourite Sci-Fi movie!

I don't consider Star Wars to be SCI-FI, so I sure as hell can't think about Ghostbusters in that light. Star Wars (one of my favorite films of all time, mind you) is definitely more Thomas Malory than Ray Bradbury...it's closer to Tolkien than to Asimov. I would settle on the compromise of "Science Fantasy" at best...even though I see it as Fantasy in its purest form.

Ghosts, on the other hand, are the title character(s) of Ghostbusters. Ghoulies and apocalyptic, metaphysical-dimensional demi-gods are traditionally associated with the Horror genre. Not that I'd consider it to be a "Horror-Comedy" by any means, but just pointing out that the horror element plays an infinitely greater roll than the science fiction one. Besides, the title isn't "Proton-Protectors". I side with Comedy pure and simple in this case.

Tat's why I love Cal. No guile.

My sentiments exactly; and the term Science - Fantasy is one I can embrace.

I too look at Star Wars in a Fantasy way and nto a Scifi way. If it tastes like ....

Ghosts, on the other hand, are the title character(s) of Ghostbusters.

Well, no; the title characters are Venkman, Stantz, Spengler, and Zeddmore. You know . . . the Ghostbusters, the guys with the proton packs.

(I can't help but note that I watched Be Kind Rewind last night, and Jack Black referred to it as sci-fi, not even mentioning comedy. :) )

Well sheeet

If Jack Black refers to ti as Sci Fi .......... :undecided :lipsrseal

Dave, you're killing me on this one. (One of the great DVX debates; I love it!)

It's comedy ! OMG.

It has elements of Action, elements of romance, elements of 'light horror' (I suppose from a child point of view?) ...

It has science, as in scientists (para), but it is not SCI FI worthy of a slug !

If you want to think of it as Scifi, that's fine, but it's PURE 100% Comedy.

This is SCIFI

Yes, yes, Yes ... a random list from the skew of someone irrelevant. But my lord, Call it Comedy-Action_Romance_SCiFi if anything.

But how can you stare at it and say "It is SCi FI?"

Aghhhhhhhhhhh

(Okay, Sunday Rant over.)

I feel like I'm on hidden camera.

John, dude, bro. Why do you never actually read the words I write?

I said it was comedy first. But it's sci-fi. Engage the shades of grey. Don't lock it into a single narrow label. Step away from the absolutes. Get out of the box. View it from different angles. It's not either or.

I gotta agree that parodies of a genre aren't actually examples of the genre. Which is why Galaxy Quest is not a science fiction film in my mind either (even though I loved it). Just like parodies of horror (Scary Movie) aren't horror, either--they're comedy or satire.

Oh my lord.

Okay. Talk about two different brain patterns conflicting. I'm sitting in Shades of Grey land times nine. Trust me, I'm an artist. :) Right Brain master. You're Left Brain to the Nth degree.

It is Scifi, it is action, it is romance, but so neglible where it sits in these genres that referencing as any of these, if even for a subcat label (Comedy Romace for example) is moot.

Here is where this started :

Favourite Sci-Fi movie!

Ghostbusters.

(Sounds Buzzer)

We'd be having the same debate if someone started a thread and asked:

Favourite Romance movie!

Ghostbusters.

Come now; would anyone ever, in the history of histories label it as such ?

No.

But wait. ONe of the MAIN plot points in the entire film is the romance between Murray and Weaver.

Starting to get my angle here ?

It's Scifi, action, romance, but not.

It's comedy.

No one calls it a romance, John. But almost everyone calls it sci-fi. Comedy first, absolutely. But sci-fi comedy. Look around.

Ray Harryhausen flicks, e.g. The Day the Earth Stood Still, It Came From Beneath the Sea, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms; Creature from the Black Lagoon. Something about those old scifi black and white flicks, the nascence of science and electronics and the cold war and the atomic bomb. They are great to watch whenever you have a cold or flu, veg out on the sofa, watch em because they are usually about 80 minutes long.

But Galaxy Quest isn't a parody in the same vein as Scary Movie. It's a legit story in its own right, and while it sends up Star Trek, it doesn't take the story of one film wholesale and then make an absurd comedic version of it. It's a science-fiction comedy, but not a spoof.

hey hey hey hey HEY.
GodDAMNit I don't see ANYbody mentioning Timecop.
Or Demolition Man! CLASSIC. Dennis Rodma--ehh Wesley Snipes deserved an Oscar.
(or--sorry Hudson...Action? Tastes like action...)

And I bet the upcoming Bruce Willis vehicle, The Surrogates (aka Demolition Man II) won't be getting any favorites either. <<although DP Oliver Wood is cool.

Other Bad Sci-Fi Action/Action Sci Fi that MIGHT just make my Favorites list:
--Suburban Commando
--Judge Dredd
--Hell Comes to Frogtown with Rowdy Roddy Piper as Sam Hell (although that might make the Porno Action Sci Fi genre...)

I think we know what this guy likes.
